Before the turtles were CGI monsters on steroids designed to sell as much merchandise to kids as possible, they were humble black and white ninjas parodying the influx of super-hero mutant comics in the early 80s. These TMNT comics from Mirage (certainly issues 1-4 plus the Raphael one-shot) are all-time classics. If you have the chance to bid on an original copy of this issue 3 for a decent price I'd highly recommend doing so as a collector's item. If not, the playful story-telling style of Eastman and Laird (before the weight of holding up a global franchise took its tole and forced them to split) is good enough to warrant picking up a reprint, trade paperback or digital copy. This grounded issue starts with a car chase through New York (very Kevin Eastman) and ends with a startling discovery, which is the preamble to the sci-fi tone of future issues (very Peter Laird!). Cowabunga dudes indeed.Read full review
