Building upon 2002's Deadly Alliance, the series' well-received leap to the 128-bit 3D fighting arena, Mortal Kombat: Deception demonstrates the same focus on the home console experience. The game offers five main modes of play, some of which will be familiar to fans of its immediate predecessor. The arcade-style Kombat mode has players fighting their way up a ladder of matches against increasingly difficult opponents, and Konquest leads them through role-playing-styled character development in a storylined third-person adventure full of fights and other events.

Also available are Kombat Chess, which lets players choose a team of fighters and challenges them to strategically select matches on a chess board, and Puzzle Kombat, a color-matching action puzzle reminiscent of Capcom's Super Puzzle Fighter, featuring cute, anime versions of the game's otherwise dark and daunting kombatants. Mortal Kombat: Deception is also one of the first 3D fighting games to offer an online multiplayer mode. Xbox Live connected gamers can simply log on to find a match against a human opponent.

There are a dozen Mortal Kombat fighters selectable at the start of the game, including both old favorites and mysterious newcomers. Longtime fans of the series will recognize veterans of the earliest Mortal Kombat games, such as Sub-Zero and Scorpion, Kabal, Baraka, Mileena, Ermac, and Nightwolf, who are joined by relative newcomers like Bo'Rai Cho, who debuted in Deadly Alliance. Deception also introduces four characters, Ashrah, Dairou, Darrius, and Kobra, each with a distinctly new style intended to balance the deadly abilities of the other characters. At least a dozen more characters can be unlocked through the course of the game, by spending "Koins" to open the correct "koffins" in the "Krypt," or by completing certain key challenges in the Konquest adventure mode.

In addition to its character selection, Mortal Kombat: Deception draws on the series' storied roots in other ways; development of the game was led by Ed Boon, co-creator of the original Mortal Kombat. Although Deception's fighting mechanics are also based on those of Deadly Alliance, a number of enhancements, adjustments, and embellishments have been made. In some instances, the gameplay may have a slightly more intense, exaggerated feel that rewards those who master the complex combo system. Characters can still take different stances, however, and choose to fight unarmed or with a weapon.

Deception features "Fight State Indicators" on the ends of the characters' health bars, that make it a little easier for players to anticipate particular dangers and time their special attacks. While it may seem these indicators would take the challenge down a notch, their addition is actually quite opportune, since Deception also adds a diverse selection of interactive arenas, many with instant-kill "death trap" elements, as well as two fatalities for each and every character -- answering the two most common complaints that fans had of Deadly Alliance.

Very Solid game with few true flaws
This game is by far the best Mortal Kombat game to date, but it is not without its flaws. One of the best parts of the game is the new Konquest Mode. In Konquest you play as Shujinko, a young warrior who is trained by Bo Rai Cho and other kombatants along his journey. This mode plays a little bit like an RPG as you are completing quest after quest and every once and a while doing a side quest. There is a lot of backtracking in this mode, which can get very frustrating, however it is still very fun(and you have to play it to unlock items in the Krypt). There are two other additions to this game, Chess Kombat and Puzzle Kombat. Chess Kombat is extremely fun, you choose a team of kombatants to use on the chess board (Leader, Champion, Sorcerer, Shifter, and Grunt) and then you fight the other team's kombatants. It plays like chess only you have to fight to eliminate the other team! The downside to this mode is the power squares, which make whoever is on the squares nearly impossible to beat (especially on harder difficulty levels). Puzzle kombat is fun to play, just match the colored blocks together! This mode is fun for a while, but the computer can be really hard to beat as you move up the ladder. Of course there is the normal Arcade fighting mode which is fun to play for a while, but konquest will keep you coming back. I covered some of the flaws, but one that was really bothering me was that the game would lock up (not sure if it was my game or XBOX, but the XBOX works fine for every other game) during key parts in Konquest. The best way around this was to save and quit every so often. Overall this is a great game, which if the scale was out of 10, would have 9/10. Buy it!!!Read full review

This game rocks!
I grew up with Mortal Kombat, I have been playing this series ever since I was 7, which is why I bought this game, lol. I love all the blood/gore they have added to this game, the konquest mode is awesome, although they could have cut back on all the training things. The puzzle mode is pretty good, was never a really big fan of tetris, lol. The chess kombat is AMAZING, that has to be my most played mode out of all of them. I like how you have to beat me in order to take my piece, a very nice twist, I must say. The special abilities you get in chess is awesome help as well. All in all, I'd have to give this game a 5* rating. It is perfect in my opinion. If you have not yet played this game, I highly advise checking it out, it's definitely worth the money!

This product is well worth the 5 to 10 bucks you'll spend on it.
The game is definitely an improvement from "Deadly Alliance". Graphics are significantly better. The seams to be less characters but the most popular ones have remained. I felt that because less characters were created, the developers had more time to make each one unique and added appealing characteristics. The players fight and strike at a much slower rate than its predecessors but it is still an improvement because the striking looks natural and real. Overall this is a great game.

Addicting gameplay will keep you hooked for days
I played the newer Mortal Kombat, and I soon fell into a nostalgic trance. This game was my favorite of the series (Other than the originals). It features A LOT of bonus content ranging from hidden characters to minigames. It is a must have for any Mortal Kombat fan.
