It makes more sense to have several internal as well as external 500GB dirves rather than one huge terabyte monster drive. If a monster drive fails, you've potentially lost a lot of data. By using several smaller drives, you data is spread out and not as likely to suffer from a single drive failure. Also, smaller sized drives can be dedicated to one specific backup job. And of course, smaller drives with one single platter are less expensive. Removable drive racks are awesome.
