My name is Jason R. Holley. To give you a little background into my credentials, I am a computer systems consultant with a small business based in Schenectady, New York. I service hundreds of computer systems and networks over the course of a year, and I deal with all brands, including Dell, HP/Compaq, Gateway, IBM/Lenovo, Acer and many others. After working with the phenomenal original series of Raptor hard drives by Western Digital, the only thing I can say about the VelociRaptor is "They Did It Again!". These drives are fantastic performers at 10,000 RPM and are solid as a rock with a 5-year warranty due to the fact that these drives are classified in W.D's "Enterprise Class" series. They are extremely efficient with their native 2.5 inch build sipping on power like you would a fine wine. This combined with the IceBlock cooling frame also makes these drives run quieter and cooler than their older Raptor counterparts. The SATA-II drive interface is very well utilized by this drive getting as much data "this side of an SSD" to the memory and microprocessor of your computer system. These days, with dual and quad-core processors, DDR3 memory and PCI Express x16 video cards, the hard drive is generally known as the slowest part of a computer system and is usually the root-cause of system slowdowns over time. Keep yourself running at peak performance with one of these drives, and you will be sure to out-run even your own expectations with this one. The Velocraptor series of extreme-performance hard drives come in 4 common sizes, 74GB, 150GB, 300GB and the all-new 600GB Velociraptor with a 6Gbps SATA-III drive interface. Check em out. You'll be glad you did. Western Digital makes a great product, and I am proud to say that this is yet another fine example of drive craftsmanship. Although the price of these drives is a bit higher than other 7200 RPM drives with much higher capacity, I will continue to use these drives in every system I build. I've had very good luck with this series of hard drive and few have ever come back to me with any problems. In those rare cases, W.D. Tech support is phenomenal. Bravo W.D. Jason R. At 10,000 rpm, this has to be one of the fastest, if not THE fastest, mechanical data drive on the market today. The numbers don't even come close to telling you what to expect. Load your OS onto one of these speed demons and everything happens faster than you can imagine. I installed one of these in my Shuttle Pentium M build. Complete Boot and POST times were so fast that from power on to ready desktop was less than 45 seconds. Applications such as VectorWorks, Acrobat Professional and Photoshop all loading much faster than expected. Of course, there are 15,000 rpm drives available, but their price doesn't really justify purchasing them. Stats are readily available on the Velociraptor's performance and they speak for themselves. Countless consumers have also chosen this drive as the one to have over all others. The Western Digital Velociraptor series of HDD drives are easily worth every penny that you pay for them. That cost is also a good reason to be buying these drives now. With the advent of single layer SSD's and the coming of Fushion-IO and all things NAND Flash memory, the mechanical HDD is in its twilight years. So for those of us not able to afford a $10,000.00 PCIe Fushion-IO card, we have the Western Digital Velociraptor. These drives can now be purchased new for .50 per GB and that price will most certainly be dropping as non-volatile flash memory takes center stage. So, stock up on them now. They'll be a very fast and cost-effective solution for any and all computer users.Read full review
I really like this drive. It is fast, quiet and was easily installed. If you are looking for high performance and your system is being impeded by a 7200rpm drive, you should consider this hard drive. Though more expensive than other drives, it has been worth the money. I chose to downsize my Windows 7 system from a slower 7200rpm, 500GB drive to this 10,000rpm 150GB Raptor, keeping my system fast and lean. To do so, I used Windows 7 management tools to shrink the single 500GB partition on the drive to its smallest size (less than 150GB), and then created a new second partition out of the remaining space. Now having two partitions to manage, I then added the new Raptor drive to my system and utilized Paragon Partition Manager 10.0 Professional to move the first partition from the old drive to my new Raptor drive. As this partition was smaller than the 150GB space available on the Raptor, I allowed Partition Manager to automatically adjust the moved partition to fill the entire Raptor drive space. Please remember, even though this hard drive comes with a 5 year warranty, all hard drives are subject to failure at some point, it is important to have a well thought-out back-up strategy. I built my own desktop computer a month ago because my old HP laptop died. I'm sick of high end laptops dying on me (3rd one and i'm only 24) so i decided to build a high end desktop and keep my laptops down to simple operations. For the storage drives, i bought two WD Caviar Black hard drives and set them up in a Raid 1 configurations to have a redundant backup of my important data, but for the operating system, i wanted something fast and responsive. A+ in both respects. My computer runs faster than any one i've ever used before :) I love this drive, and i've had no problems with it so far.
I run 3 velociRaptor drives in 3 diff systems. 74Gb 150Gb & 300Gb All perform well for me and are my best drives. Some say you could raid 7200rpm drives and get just as good performance. But I don't want to run a raid and worry about backup and restore issues from drive images. I don't game so maybe a pair of VelociRaptors in Raid 0 would make time go backwards, but for my office server and for my home video and music editing. I'm pleased and see a big speed increase over 7200 rpm drives. Consider 139 years (1.2M hrs) MTBF. Quiet running. (now I have the regular 10K rpm Raptor drives and they are as noisy as a WWII tank and one has failed on me within 60 days. WD replaced it and it is still ticking about 1 year later.) All you 7200 people, Go 10K VelociRaptor spend the extra bucks and save if you buy them on ebay, you will never go back to slow drives again. You already know that the HDD and the Video are usually the bottleneck in you system. Fix on of those with this drive.Read full review
