This animated film is one you (the adult) will not mind watching with your child(ren). 20th Century Fox has created characters that are just as colorful and memorable as any out of the world of Disney. It is based on the real life myth that Anastasia Romanov, daughter of the last Czar of Russia (Nicholas II), survived the bloody murder of the royal family during the brutal Communist revolution and subsequent civil war. If you are at least as old as me, then you will remember Anna Anderson, who claimed to be the real Anastasia, but was later found to be a fraud through DNA testing. In the animated film, Anastasia has grown up and has no recollection of who she is. She is talked into believing that she could be Anastasia by a swindler named Dmitri, who is looking for a reward from the surviving Grand Duchess. It turns out she is the real Anastasia and, of course, ends up happily ever after with Dmitri after his redeeming qualities surface. Worth seeing is the animated Rasputin in limbo who has, ironically, not completely died. Of course, this plays off the true story of Rasputin who was poisened, shot, and drowned before actually dying. Throughout the movie, he is trying to foil the happy ending by sending Anastasia to join her family in the afterlife and fullfill his promised curse of the Romanovs. In reality, Rasputin had control over the royal family due to his uncanny healing powers of the hemopheliac son of Nicholas II (Alexei). Rasputin was seen as a threat to the crown and was assassinated by Prince Yousopov of the royal family along with some help. Important to note, Rasputin prophesied the violent end of the Romanovs within two years should he be assassinated by a member of the royal family. Strange but true. Powerhouse voices of interest in this film include: Meg Ryan, John Cusack, Kelsey Grammer, Christopher Lloyd, Hank Azaria, Kirsten Dunst, and Angela Lansbury.Read full review
This is an old favorite of mine and I decided to buy it on DVD. The animation is beautiful with a great mix of computer graphics, making some of the scenes look real. The plot is great, with a good balance of comedy, adventure, and romance. The cast of voice actors has few big names in it which fit each character very well. A movie for children and adults a like. It also has a nice soundtrack, the characters do sing but most of the songs are good. Uncluded in this set is the second movie that's about the white bat, Bartook, I think is his name. I haven't watched it yet but I don't doubt it'll be good.
Great movie loved watching again since kids were little.
