I am giving this book only 4 stars and that is because I think Ms. Slaughter has painted herself in a corner with some of the events in this book. How can there be more Grant County books? Makes me very upset--thus the rating. And I can't say more than that or it would spoil the book if you haven't read it. Like the rest of her Grant County books, Karin Slaughter writes of the hideous violence that apparently goes on around us but that thank heavens hasn't touched me or mine in a big way. In this book she really delves into Lena's past and we come to know her better and understand her more. To get at Lena's character, Ms. Slaughter takes us back to Lena's home town where the plot turns on the skinhead culture and the devastation of meth. As usual, she looks at it up close and personal and it isn't a pretty sight. This book is filled with ugliness and cruetly as well as bravery and goodness, but the characters are complicated and never easy to love. This book skips back and forth between Lena's activities and that of Jeffrey and Sara and also back and forth in time a bit and that makes it confusing at times to follow if you aren't reading it all in one sitting. But it does build the tension and suspense and it was a hard book for me to put down. Have I mentioned how much I hate the ending? Well, I do. I threw my book across the room.Read full review
Great book. Wish it wasn't so good so I can get to sleep earlier. I love this author.
