I would rate this EXCELLENT except I know there are otehrs who would like this but not as much as I liked it and they would be disappointed to find it not to be as highly acclaimed. It is a mix of science fiction and macabre, which we normally expect from this author. The characters are larger than life and there is enough detail and description in the narative to make all the characters come to life and trick you into thinking this is a real story. At the end, you blink your eyes and tell yourself, no it was not real but it sure seems like it could have been. The Buick was the perfect vehicle to base this on, the perfect model, the perfect year. The author's perspective leaves you anticipating the next event throughout htis book. Although some of the events are so bizarre they border on the absurd, you might begin to lose interest but then the author brings you back closer to the characters and suddenly you are drawn in again. Definiely worth the moeny spent and the time spent on teh adventure.Read full review
If you've read or listened to Stephen Kings "On Writing" and are familair with his work and his outlook on writing, then "From A Buick 8" is really no suprise. To others less familiar with the writer, this book is probably very disappointing. Stephen King has stated that he does not approach writing by thinking of himself as a horror writer. His approach is to put interesting characters in a tough situation, then see what happens. Frequently, things get very strange very fast. He doesn't start a story looking for the supernatural, but the supernatural always seem to find there way into his stories. His stories, according to King, are usually about ordinary or flawed people trying to cope with the extraordinary. This is what happens in "From A Buick 8". A car, or what looks like a car, is abandoned by a driver that is not quite human. A Pennsylvania State Highway Patrol Troop is left to deal with the thing as best they can, and for years the "car" sits in storage. Yet it is not quiet. And it is not idle. It touches the lives of the entire Troop in ways that range from the unsettling to the horrific. Sounds cool, doesn't it? Well, it is, but not in a way you may be use to seeing a King story unfold. First, this is not "Christine", so don't think you are getting that kind of story. Second, no one actually does much with the car other than take some pictures and document the ... things ... that occasionally come out of it. The car just sits in the background of everyones life and occasionally makes its presence known in some very colorful and memorable ways (as all King stories do). Look, I can't go into much more detail without giving away the story, but let me just say this. Stephen King really doesn't care WHY strange things sometimes happen. Although he has taken a stab at explanations in his stories in the past, he really doesn't like to explain them. "Things just happen, that's all," he once wrote. And that is exactly what this story is about. A strange thing happened. No one knows why. No one will ever know. People coped as best they could. The end. Viewed with this in mind, King does as fine a job as he ever has at building an imaginatively weird landscape around characters you care about (although he takes rather a long time getting there). But if you want the story to end with a satisifyingly conclusive answer to the question of 'Why', you are going to be disappointed. 'From A Buick 8' is memorable, thoughtful and entertaining, but you may not find it very satisfying when it is done.Read full review
One great story and the audio book is read by many different voices which makes it like watching a movie in your mind. This audio book is a must for long rides, and summer is coming... vacation trips, country drives! 13.5 hours of Stephen King! The story is read so well, and written so well that you don't want to get out of the car when you've reached your destination! Highly recommended.
