High Tide is one of the great Australian movies of all time. No, one of the GREAT movies of all time. Made in 1987 it still holds up, with the main protagonist being Australia itself: its seedy clubs, caravan parks, gritty working class, salty characters, long ribbons of road, intense light, and of course windswept tracts of beach. Beautifully directed and shot, with stellar performances from Judy Davis, Jan Adele and Claudia Karvan. If they did nothing else in their lives it would be enough. Even Davis's husband, Colin Friels, delivers (not mad on him as an actor, although he was good in Monkey Grip). For icing, there's an amusing cameo featuring Frankie J. Holden. Written, directed and produced by women, women are also the heroes in this movie, and they don't disappoint us even while they disappoint each other. In turn, the storyline is poignant, desperate, humorous, utterly convincing, utimately heartwarming, and always compelling. It's a story of redemption.Read full review
