In 1856, the mintage of the Three-Cent Silver jumped to almost 1.5 million pieces, presumably because of demand from commercial channels. This makes the 1856 one of the more common dates in the series. Hundreds of Mint State examples are known, mostly in MS62 to MS64. Gems are scarce but not rare, but in MS66 this date becomes extremely elusive. In MS67, the 1856 3 Cent Silver is a supreme condition-rarity.
This date often comes weakly struck, especially on the legends and stars at the periphery, but clashmarks are less of a problem for this date than, say, 1855.
I just did.
