This was a 2-part TV miniseries, which updated the original film with Ingrid Bergman and Yul Brynner, telling the story of the mysterious young woman who fails at suicide, and was confined to a mental hospital, then claimed to be the surviving daughter of the Czar Nicholas of Russia, whose family wss murdered in Russia about 1918. Omar Shariff plays the Czar in flashbacks, does a good job of portraying the tragic Russian leader. The story covers several decades in which the young woman, portrayed by beautiful Amy Irving, tries to prove she is Anastasia, even proceeding to a court trial, which did not settle the question. The acting is generally good, but he script was not great. AS many people who are familiar with the story know, DNA samples taken from the real claimant, Anna Anderson, proved after her death that she was not related to the Czar's family, and it is likely that she was really a poor Polish factory girl who had a mental breakdown and imagined she was Anastasia, was coached by former members of the Russian aristocracy whose agenda would have been helped by her successful claim. I purchased the VHS tape because I am a fan of the wonderful British actress, Claire Bloom, who played Alexandra, the Czar's wife.Read full review
