This is an excellent video to use to introduce kids to the world of classical music. Disney makes it interesting for young kids while at the same time introducing them to the concept of each character having a theme using various instruments to achieve the purpose. Then when they hear the piece without animation they can identify the characters " that's Peter" "That's the wolf" ect and then it is easy to move on to other pieces from Symphony & Ballet to Opera and see the same parallel as to themes for various characters ect. It's interesting as an art form as well as being instructive.
This was my very favorite storybook as a child. Now that I have children of my own, (ages 3 and 5) I knew they would enjoy it as I had at their age. They liked the book so much we had to read it every night before they fell asleep. When I found the VHS mini movie, I had to get it for them. Well, they watch it over and over and over again, always captivated and intrigued by the "big bad wolf". The illustrations in the book are just like the movie, but the music and animation of the film brings the story to life. Both the narrator and classic musical accompaniment do such an excellent job articulating the tale that none of the characters have any lines at all. My children actually enjoy this movie more than the current Disney movies popular with their own generation. I highly recommend it, especially for boys!Read full review
This movie has a unique way of helping children learn the different sounds various instruments make through a simple story I had for my children. My copy was lost and I needed to replace it. It was not that easy to find it. It also contains two other short stories after Peter and the Wolf related to music education.
I adore the story of Peter and the Wolf; and Disney's version is my favorite. The cartoon characters seem perfect. The story is Russian and some versions of the characters, mostly Peter, seem too harsh and rigid. In this Disney classic, Peter is precious, especially his facial experessions. Sonja and the others are sweet, funny, sad, silly--exactly as you'd like them to be. The music adds drama. If you haven't seen it--you must!
Thanks.
