A compelling, tender and reflective book about Confederate soldiers returing from the Civil War to remake their lives amid the complications of occcupation and devastation. I will never forget the characters or the lyrical descriptions of nature. In my estimation, and I am a great reader, this is one of the best books I've ever read. And did I forget to say it is funny and sad and just pulls you into an amazing reality? It was hard to let the world and the characters go, so I ordered The Black Flower and The Judas Field, which are the first and third members of the trilogy. Thak you, Howard Barr.
Well written prose.
