This is a great book that gets to the point and is understandable. It explains the science and reasonable examples that are easy and interesting to understand. I am really glad this book was recommended to me. I recommend this book to everyone.

I have had to personally live with a spouse who has Borderline Personality Disorder for nearly 25 years. I was unaware of the cause of the consistently inconsistent behavior, but assumed things would improve over time. They didn't and probably won't without proper professional intervention. This is a Catch-22 for the BPD person - to trust someone for help when they have learned (or feared) to not trust anyone. This book, while somewhat dated yet still very relevant, was able to give me the insight to the many facets of the BPD condition. Having thought for years that I was part of the cause (having been repeatedly accused of such for years by the BPD individual, who continually denied responsibility), I lived with the guilt of being the one to blame while being helpless to cause the positive change I so dearly desired for the one I love. The reality, as made clear in this book, is that while there are ways for me to better handle the relationship, the only real way for change must come from BPD person, no one else. And then not without proper (i.e. professional) help and much patience over potentially a very long time. I am now better informed to recognize and identify what a BPD person is, the likely causes from their past, how to better deal with everyday life with a BPD person and, most importantly to me, to be freed of the guilt that it is me to blame and only I must do something to make it right. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting the type of insight I've described above. The writting may be a bit clinical in some places but is at the same point quite down to earth and understandable to the lay person such as myself. A second book I would recommend on this topic is "Lost in the Mirror: An Inside Look at the Borderline Personality Disorder". It is written from more of a 'series of actual examples' point of view, somewhat the telling of a story based on reality. The two books together will go a long way to helping anyone become better informed of what this condition is all about and ways to make life better for everyone involved with the BPD individual.Read full review
I bought this book after my child's doctor told me I should read it to understand my child better. 2&1/2 years ago it starting with an almost successful attempt to kill herself. At 15 I thought all things were going pretty good for her, wrong, Bi-polar and personality disorder have distroyed her life and ours. The book has given my insight into a world we have been thrown into. It has giving me a little hope, if we can keep her alive to reap some happiness.
...but it's a bit dated, just because of the year written.
