I purchased the book to continue the story of the Black Tower. I found the first two books of the series in a used book store, and am now using eBay to find the rest of the story. Book Four contains Roland's story of his lost love, and a good part of what turned him into the strange and lonely gunslinger he has become. Wizard and Glass is necessary to the understanding of the complete series, but would be an engaging tale as a stand-alone novel as well. It would leave some questions unanswered but does offer a completed adventure in itself. There is an "Argument" in the front of the book that explains the situation existing at the start of the first chapter. Book Four was the easiest to read, and the first of the series that felt as if it could be read as story by itself. Steven King's long hiatus between books of the series undoubtedly contributed to this, my only complaint.Read full review
Couldn't read it fast enough and was afraid I'd finish before "Wolves of Calla" was in my mailbox.

This is by far the best book in the Gunslinger Series. In fact, I wish sometimes this is where I had stopped reading! It really gets into the world Roland comes from and some experiences that make and break his character. It focuses mostly on his teenage years before his quest for the Dark Tower. Loved it and would even reccomend it if you haven't read the prior books!
exciting and engaging, a part of a longer tale.
