I was introduced to Fela Kuti after reading an interesting article about his life and musical genius. The article compared Fela's influence on music to Bob Marley's, of which I am a big fan. The article also quoted the God-Father of Soul, James Brown, as saying, "Fela Kuti was the originator of Funk!" As a huge fan of Funk, with Brown and Marley credentials, and as someone who is always interested in finding new music to listen to I decided to give Fela Kuti and his Afro-Beat Music a shot. I wasn't disappointed! Fela's music is an eclectic stew of rock, jazz, african tribal, funk, and reggae. Horn's blastin, rhythmic drumming, wailing guitars and rambling lyrics making you want to get out of your seat and get movin. The only reason this album didn't receive an excellent rating was many of the songs are shortened pieces of the much longer original song and I would like to hear them in their entirety. But, don't let that scare you away from the this album which is a good introduction to the genius that is Fela Kuti and his eclectic mix of music.Read full review
