Politicians, developers, and $$$$ have not so good record when it comes to the extraction industry of pulling $$$$ into the pockets of those who willingly, quickly, and even obsessively forfeit the common good, the public trust, and their fellow men to make a few. The Corps of Engineers has been dredging and improving the outer banks since 1825. They are still pouring millions today into the same sand they were back then. Of course keeping inlets open is good for the fraction of 1 percent of the citizens who run sport fishing boats - it just costs the rest of us millions for their enjoyment. . . . Enough sermon. This book explains lots of things like why this barrier island formation on the NC coast is unique. No other coastline on any other continent mirrors our outer banks. It tells the stories of the geologists whose research confirmed how this ribbon of sand formed and continues to evolve. The Blackbeard story is retold with the added information of sandbars and channels and how they precipitated the outcome. Animals and plants have evolved somewhat in isolation and have developed peculiar coping mechanisms to deal with the harsh and somewhat barren environment. A good book for all who visit or are interested in the Outer Banks. The authors are good writers who bring life and context that enables even more comprehensive understanding and appreciation.Read full review
There is no better vacation spot anywhere than OBX. This book was excellent and explained so many questions I ask each time we visit. I am so glad I was able to find out so much about all the sand that is on the barrier islands, what happens when the sand is kept from it's normal shift in the ocean. How in the world all the homes and septic tanks don't sink right through the sand!! It is written by men who really knew their stuff as far as the history of the Outer Banks is concerned. The facts that the islands themselves are not much over 1,000 yrs. old is amazing. Ocracoke information is a treasure for me to read and to explain some of what it's doing in the middle of the ocean and the sound that crashes right into the waves of the ocean while you are riding on the ferry from Hattress to Ocracoke. The ocean is trying to do it's normal job trying to get to the sound, but people are greedy and keep trying to save all the land they can for the development. You can't fight mother nature. After you read this book you will really understand why!!!Read full review
