Gee, I hope that being the first reviewer doesn't mean I'm the first purchaser. Yes, Dr. John is an acquired taste and I suppose if one has been listening to him for almost 40 years, that mathematically makes one "old." Satchmo's songs on the CD go back even farther and when I find myself singing along and knowing most of the lyrics, they must be far back in my memory bank from when my parents watched Ed Sullivan on TV. All of Dr. John's remarkable voice, with a thick overlay of all things Nawlins, could be enough to reinterpret these oldies. But he further adapts them: Mack the Knife is rapped, emphasizing it is a song about murder. World on a String makes me feel in love; My Home Town rather than being sickly sentimental, becomes an anthem to a simpler America. Others I never heard before, probably due to the said TV censors, but Hunk of Trash has now entered my lexicon. I like this album better than the Grammy winner Locked Down. Let's hope this is this year's nominee.Read full review
