The book is very complete in that there are many thing that we sewers from the l950's and on up in years use. It has a very nice section on pockets with linings, and it cover things that are not mentioned in newer books do not cover such as chinese buttons, how to make frogs and how to make leather buttons by placing by using a spool of thread as an aid. It also covers how the chinese use binding to cover raw edges on linings. It has a large area that covers home furnishings and drapery. How to cover a chair or a sofa. It go into tailoring that explains how to baste by machine or hand on interfacings to shape properly.a It also goes into mens and boys clothing and how to take measurements on them. It also has a great page or two on smocking by machine or hand. It cover tools that are necessary for good sewing. It also covers alterations to patterns. I highly recommend this book above almost evry book I have purchased except I rank the Vogue/butterwick guide to step by step sewing techniques an equal but none better.Read full review

I have an older edition of this book which is full of helpful hints as well as being easy to use. Although I read about it before I bought I am still a little disappointed. It seems as though Reader's Digest didn't want to as thorough an edition. It is not good for a beginner.

I bought this book to replace a copy I had when I was younger. I also bought it for my 2 teenage daughters to use as a reference guide to learn a new sewing techinue. The step by step pictures make it a very easy to follow book there for making it a great book for any sewer that is begining. It also comes in handy if you forget how to do a techinue. I highly recmend this book to any one who is still a beginger at sewing or for anyone who loves to sew as a sewing reference book. The book came to me in excellent condition and was sent to me promptly.
This book is with out a doubt the most useful book ever written about sewing, (& believe me, I have them all)... A MUST for anyone who sews, from beginners to professionals! It explains those annoying little problems in an easy to understand way, & makes them easy. I absolutely LOVE this book! My old copy had been lost in my moving from state to state, & I have felt lost with out it. I didn't even feel the need to buy the newer, recently written version because I have been so satisfied with this one since it was written in 1981...
I bought this book for an advanced costume tech class I'm taking. Though the book is as old as I am, its techniques are still valid and useful. There are a few minor details that are left out that I had to ask my professor about, but those were in the tailoring section where it is assumed that those using such techniques will have a background in advanced sewing. I do feel like there could be some newer techniques that we're missing out on, but for a costume class and for general purpose sewing and tailoring (where it's not one's profession), this book is great. I would definitely have it as one resource for sewing, but not as the only resource.
