If you want to teach your children truth rather than just tradition, then "If You Were at the First Thanksgiving" is a great way to do it. This delightful retelling of history is honest about the struggles but hopeful like the Pilgrims themselves. We read it to our three boys, 6 and under, during mealtimes as part of our family table discussion. It is written in short, informative sections; the boys never wanted us to stop reading! The illustrations are very well done and keep young eyes wide with wonder for the next bit of information. The author helps children jump in and be included. An exellent addition to the family reading library and Thanksgiving tradition.
I ordered this book for a second grader, but I actually read it myself first and found it very informative and interesting even for an adult. It was so full of facts that were new to me, a 35-year-old, that I was almost motivated to educate my whole family (via email) or encourage them to buy the book, as well. In fact, a child in the upper grades of elementary school might get more out of this book than a child in first or second grade, but of course it really depends on individual reading level and interest. A child who does read this book might be inspired to become more interested in history.
