I am a lover of ancient mythology whether it be Greek, Roman or Egyptian. In my study of mythology I fell in love with Cleopatra, the daughter of Isis. When I first saw this book in my local store, I knew I had to have it. Initially I was a little worried about the length of it... after all it is hard to keep a person engrossed in a story for 800 pages! However, I bought it anyway, and I am so glad I did. As soon as I started reading this book, I knew the 800 pages were going to fly by. It is an utterly fabulous book, with a plethora of information on the lifestyle and culture of ancient Egypt and even a little insight into the Roman world. A lot of the information is historically accurate, although you can't take it completely literally. George did invent some characters, but only to fill historical gaps. As I neared the end of the book, I found myself hoping for a different ending than what I knew must be. And after I read the final page, I wished that it could go on for another 800 pages. This book is truly a literary masterpiece! I highly recommend it, not only for history buffs, but anyone who loves romance, action, mystery and betrayal.Read full review
I absolutely fell in love with this book that truly moved me back to a period and place that is fascinating. The reason why you cannot put this book down is not the same as that of a suspense novel… even though there is a lot of action that makes you turn the pages, what makes you want to continue to read addictively is the delicious feeling of being moved back in time and not wanting to leave that time and Cleopatra. Egypt, Cleopatra, everything she went through, the beautiful settings, the way the story is told… it is all very well written. Reading fiction that has a lot of historical facts woven into it is also a bonus so that the book teaches you some history as well in an entertaining way.
This book is a must have for anyone who is interested in the history of Egypt. Margaret George is an excellent writer who draws you in with her unique storytelling abilities. This book tells the story of Cleopatra's life from her early childhood to her untimely death. It is very fascinating and it is one of those types of books that you just can't put down at night. I think that anyone would enjoy reading this book - even if they were not interested in Egypt's history because the story reads like a modern love story that is very dramatic and ends in tragedy. This is a great story that I highly recommend.
I love the details in this book. It makes you feel like you were observing the whole thing. This book is the one that began all the historical fiction rading for me. I give this book to friends and I haven't come across anyone who hasn't liked this book. I also like how Cleopatra isn't painted as the villan like so many Roman stories do. This book is for those that like female empowerment. Excellent!!
Margaret George is brilliant. What a story.!!!
