This is a new book and provides new insight on one of our least known Presidents who numbered among his closest friends Nathaniel Hawthorne and Jefferson Davis. It is an indepth look at the post presidential period of his life with new material illustrating Pierce's opposition to some of the Constitutional bypasses of the Lincoln administration during the war, as well as an enduring friendship with Confederate President Jefferson Davis at a time when that friendship might have been usefully and conveniently broken by Pierce but was not. The book brings Pierce alive in ways not always common in political biography and I found it both informative and enlightening. I would highly recomment it to interested readers.
