Who ever thought you could learn history from a musical. Certain-lee you can. As the title implies the story centers around the writting and publishing of the Declaration of Independence. William Daniels as John Adams, Howard da Silva as Franklin head a great cast. Daniels through his performance steals the show. He is outstanding. The music though sometimes disjointed and out of place does a good job of conveying the underlying emotion in the scenes. I was impressed while watching this movie that writers and composers did not shy away from dealing with all the conflicting issues that went into the Declaration document itself. The handling of the slavery issue showed that the compromises made then would come back to haunt our nation's history later. This is a great flick.
Entertaining, and believe it or not very informative. An excellent way to introduce the topics of The Constitution, freedom, slavery, and politics in general to an audience that may be less than willing to learn about history. I use it in my classroom and the kids love it...they can see the humor, love the quick wit of the writers, and in general get an understanding of life at the time.
Seen this movie many times but enjoy it more each time. This musical is very historical with so many facts that it is educational to watch it over and over again. My husband and I also saw a great similarity between the slavery question in 1776 to the foreign involvement question of today in trying to fix too many things too soon. We can't solve all the world's problems. I love the special attention and characterization given to each state's delegates. Enjoyable and informative.
