When this movie came out in the mid 70's, everybody loved it. This was just the right movie for the time. There was gang and drug violence everywhere you looked. You couldn't turn the news without hearing about somebody being raped or killed, or about drug violence. Then, Charles Bronson - Mister Cool; the cold blooded ice man, exploded upon the screen with this movie. Practically everybody was ready to do the same thing! The entire nation was at it's wits end and ready for vigilantism. In the movie, Paul Kersey's (Bronson) wife and daughter are followed home from the market and brutally attacked in their home by a group of thugs. His wife is dead and his daughter is raped and beaten. She has mentally withdrawn and is vegetative. Kersey makes a trip to Arizona where he designs a real estate development. While there he is introduced to guns and shooting, and a whole new way of life. Everyone owns guns and they don't have any where near the criminal activity and violence like New York. As a parting gift, his friend gives him a gun kit, a .32cal pistol. Back in New York, the police have no suspects and don't seem too eager to do anything. Kersey then starts shooting thugs and muggers. He kills close to a dozen and the cops have to stop him. Problem is, by killing these thugs, crime is down 50%. The police don't want to catch him, they just him to go away. Eventually wounded by a crook that he killed, the cops catch him but let him go. . .if he leaves town.Read full review

The original 1974 "Death Wish" is a classic Charles Bronson old school movie. The main character, Paul Kersey's wife is murdered, and he becomes a one-man vigilante looking to clean-up crime in New York City. Very well-made film directed by Michael Winner. The original movie was the best, all of the sequels were not as good in my opinion.

Charles Bronson, is the Epitome (perfect example) of the PAYBACK , (revenge or the avenger) of the bad guys. Just pure un-adulterated revenge. We have all wanted to do that at one time or another. He didn't take no BS from anybody. He did what he felt he had to do. It makes you feel better knowing the scum of this earth doesn't get away with killing someone. There's no Justice, there's JUST US . Law Enforcement can't be there, even when criminals get off through some stupid loophole in the system. This is a GREAT SERIES, I have all 5 of them. I've watched them several times, I still never tire of watching them. Mr. Bronson is the Quintessential Avenger. Even though vigilanteism may be legally wrong, it fit's our mind-sets, because people are tired of criminals getting away with their crimes. There's more fear of our justice system than anything else. both of our system & with-in the system, people losing their lives over nothing, Justice system can't handle it, We need people like Mr. Bronson, even if it's only for purely psychologigal justice. Great Movies All Around. The 5th. movie is the BEST. shows more of what needs to be done and DO IT. I'll never tire of this series, Just sorry there's not more of them made. Get the movies, you'll love them. Thanks for reading. ChampaigneRead full review
I watched this for the first time the other day, this movie is almost 40 years old! I will say that while film technique and technology have drastically improved, I enjoy seeing the way things were back then i.e. Clothing styles, Cars, backgrounds, furniture, and stuff like that. What got me to write this review is how pertinent the same issues are today! Gun Control and Crime! With modern surveillance Bronson would be caught today doing his Vigilante Justice, but back then was totally possible. Good flick. Dated for sure, but worth watching
