I love my Roomba! The vacuuming ability is actually a lot better than I had expected, and the little brush that sweeps along the walls to push dirt into the Roomba's path makes the edgework superior to that of most standard vacuums. The stair-detection feature does not seem to work, and so Roomba has taken a few tumbles down our stairs. He then beeps plaintively, just as he does when he get stuck under the bed. Also, make sure that fishing line is not available for his ingestion, or you will spend quite a while unwinding a mile of it from his brushes. Neither my husband nor I like to vacuum, but using roomba is easy and fun, so our house is a lot cleaner than it was before. Besides, roomba is cute, easy to use, and more durable than expected (i.e. weathers tumbles down the stairs without breaking). I don't think it's a good idea to leave him to work unattended, as he does get stuck occasionally and sometimes finds things that one would prefer he not suck in (like fishing line, electric cords, loose papers, corners of rugs, clothes). He also knows how to get stuck in the bathroom, and he really appreciates it when someone opens the door that he has inadvertently closed to let him out. I have been recommending Roomba to everyone I know. The only reason I give him a rating of 4 instead of 5 is because he tumbles down the stairs - a problem easily solved by placing a case of beer on the top step so that he has something to bump into before tumbling. of course I could also use the invisible wall, but I haven't unpacked that yet, because placing a physical barrier in his way does the same thing.Read full review
These seem to be the only devices of this type that are readily available. I use mine for cleaning a room in which I keep several parrots that throw seed onto the floor. The Roomba robot does a rather good job of cleaning under the cages. It is able to get under cages and remove the seed quite well. It does not make much noise, so it does not bother the birds. The capacity of the litter bin is adequate to clean the bird room. I also occasionally use it for cleaning other areas. It is supposed to return to its charging station when it has finished its cleaning task. Once in a while it seems to "forget" to do this and runs down away from the charging station. It also does not clean right around the charging station for some odd reason. Replacement battery packs are rather expensive. If one can locate the odd 3 cornered screwdriver, one can purchase the battery set and replace the batteries for much less. The 3 cornered screws seem an attempt by the manufacturer to discourage users from replacing batteries rather than purchasing their expensive battery packs. It is fairly easy to clean internally. The first one I had worked about two years and then had catastrophic failure. Other users seem not to have such problems. This new one seems virtually identical to the older model.Read full review
the one I got is an older model, so newer models may differ. still, it's pretty good at doing what it's supposed to do - clean the floors. I have 2 dogs, 3 cats and a bunch of birds, so keeping up with the floors has always been a chore, which is why I decided to try a roomba. I'll still have to haul out the vacuum every now and then, and you do have to pick up the clutter or the poor thing ends up bouncing to itself in a 'corner' made of your stuff, lol. It's also a little louder than I expected, but nowhere near as loud as the vacuum cleaner. The pets didn't care at all, so that was a good thing. The instruction book could stand to be a little more detailed, as well - for example, it says 'use the remote to move the roomba into the next cleaning area'; it doesn't mention that if you hit the power button or the pause button before using the arrows, it's going to do what you want for 3 seconds and then do what it wants. Took quite a bit of fiddling with it to figure out to turn off the power button and then use the arrows (which makes no sense, I've just turned off the power and NOW you want me to tell it where to go? but that's how it works). Overall, a good machine with room for improvement.Read full review
When I recieved both of my Roombas, I found the same issue with them both. If you buy a used machine, pull the filter out and clean the whole thing. I took some cleaning wipes (i won't throw names around) and cleaned the filter holder, dust bin, and the brushes. I know it sounds wierd, but you have to clean your vacuum. I really enjoy having the Roombas and they are a good time saver if you don't have the time to deep clean your floors. HOWEVER, they don't work to well on my carpets, as I have a medium pile carpet. If I had been able to afford a Roomba in college, that would have helped clean those floors before inspections. If you are unsure on weather to buy a Roomba or not, let me tell you my test. I took a tube sock filled with talc (AKA baby powder). I dropped it on my bathroom floor and made two big splashes of powder on the floor. Anybody that uses powder on the floor knows it is now the easiest thing to get up. I let my Roomba work and 45 mins later, you could not tell I had dropped the powder. Now, why would powder be signifigant if you are thinking of getting a Roomba? If your house is mostly hardwood, like mine, it helps pick up the dust on the floor. If you are like me, you can dust and clean the hard wood and turn around 30 mins later and have dust. It is maddening, but Roomba can dust/sweep every day if you want, more than once if you want them too. In short, I am happy with my Roomba(s) and don't regret buying them. I wish they had been cleaner and better taken care of when I purchased, but they are good now. I would and have and DO recommend them for College students, elderly, and ANYONE who wants a clean floor but doesn;t have the time to sweep or mop every day!Read full review
This is my 2nd robot and I think they are fantastic. I have wood floors in my entire house and 2 dogs and the iRobot is a huge time saver. I hate vacuuming and now my floors are free of dog hair and look super clean. The robot must have a good battery or you will not get desired results. Additionally, you have to keep it clean or it will start doing "the circle dance". I have taken mine to the garage and had them use the air compressor to blow all the stuff out. One negative is that the 4210 and 4220 are very loud (not as loud as an upright vacuum), so I recommend starting it before you leave the house. Also, you will find yourself mesmerized by the little guy going around the room. I believe buying a used iRobot is hit or miss. If you have a good battery, you will know the first time you run it if it works or not. It should back away from the base and then proceed to clean the room in some sort of pattern. It should go around the walls and in straight lines. A robot that does not continue in a straight line and goes another way for no reason has something wrong with a sensor. Blowing it out with air might work, but if you can send it back and try another, I recommend you should do it.Read full review
