I purchased this book because I regularly play the Catan game. I wanted to get it as a gift for a fellow Catan lover. After reading some reviews on other sites, and reviews about how the game's developer put so much thought into choosing an author for a story about the game, I thought that this would, perhaps, be a good wholesome read. It was a good book, it did have some good historical research behind it. However, there were some parts that were pretty graphic. Much like a Diana Gabaldon book, I was sucked in by the historical setting and details, then grossed out by descriptions of men sodomizing other men. Although this book was not as graphic as the Diana Gabaldon books that I no longer read, it was still sufficiently graphic that I probably won't be reading this author again and I definitely will not be giving it as a gift. Had this book omitted those details, I would have loved it. If you are a person that can stomach that sort of thing and love a good historical fiction read, this is probably a good book to read. However, if you are a person that is sickened by portrayals of men sodomizing other men, this book is not for you. Personally, I think that portion of the story was unnecessary for character development and that the other details about the "villain" of the story were sufficient evidence that the man was of poor character.Read full review
