I decided to buy this book after first buying and reading 'Becoming Vegetarian' to make sure I did it safely and healthfully. I decided being Vegetarian wasn't enough for me so purchased this book 'Becoming Vegan' to gain more information and insight into how to become Vegan safely and have all the knowledge necessary. It reads sometimes like a Biology text and breaks foods down to their nutrient levels and which foods are high or low in them. This book gives you the background on how Veganism began which is interesting and it helps make the transition a lot easier: like shopping, recipes, which foods to eat the most of, supplements, knowledge to inform curious friends or acquaintances, and what being a vegan does to your body. It is very objective and gives the facts in a clear, unbiased way complete with statistics obtained from reliable resources and numerous studies conducted; the results don't even shy away from telling the dangers or downsides to certain unplanned vegan diets as well. Anyone who wants to become Vegan safely and learn almost everything there is about it should buy this book. My one criticism of this book is that there isn't any information on the relation of soy estrogen and if its related to cancer and how different amounts consumed affect the human body.Read full review
I really enjoyed becoming vegan. I bought it as a gift and considered buying a coy for myself after reading it. Becoming vegan is really great resource, written by dietitians, for people who would like to become without requiring a wall full of supplements. It breaks down nutrient requirements & ways to achieve for different stages in life such as children vs. athletes. Other books may have more recipes but this book tells you best way to make them into a balanced vegan diet. I also enjoyed some of the notes on the history of veganism. I highly recommend this book.
Whether you are already living as a "vegan" or just curious about the lifestyle one might lead without consuming animal products this is a great book. Not a lot of recipes if that is what your looking for....
