Miles Raymond (Paul Giamatti) is an unsuccessful writer, a wine-aficionado, and a depressed middle school English teacher living in San Diego, who takes his soon-to-be-married actor friend and college roommate, Jack Cole (Thomas Haden Church), on a road trip through Santa Ynez Valley wine country. Miles wants to relax and live well. However, Jack wants one last sexual fling. In the wine country, the men encounter Maya (Virginia Madsen), a waitress at Miles's favorite restaurant, The Hitching Post, and her friend, Stephanie (Sandra Oh), an employee at a local winery. They arrange a double date without revealing that Jack is to be married. Jack has an affair with Stephanie while Miles tries to connect with Maya. Maya finds out Jack is to be married and tells Stephanie, who attacks Jack, breaking his nose. Upon finding out his manuscript has been rejected again, Miles makes a scene and gets drunk at a wine tasting room, and Jack links up with another woman. To explain the broken nose to his fiancée, Jack runs Miles's car into a tree. At the wedding, Miles faces the fact that his ex-wife will never return to him. Alone, he drinks his prized wine, a 1961 Château Cheval Blanc from a disposable coffee cup at a roadside diner. Later, he receives a message from Maya, who says she enjoyed his manuscript and invites him to visit. The last scene in the movie shows Miles back in Santa Ynez, knocking on Maya's door.Read full review
Sideways is one of the best movies to appear on screen in a long time. Alexander Payne has not made a bad movie yet and this is by far his best work to date. Nominated for five Oscars and winner of the best screenplay. Paul Giamatti gives a great performance why the man has not won an Oscar yet has me bewildered. He has played great in every movie he has been in. ( Big Fat Liar, Cinderella Man, American Splendar, Paycheck) Thomas Hayden Church is funny as his college friend. The scenery is lush and the story will have you wanting more. Miles ( Paul) is a failed novilest who is going through a mid life crisis. He is depressed and divorced. One of the lines in the movie has stuck with me for a long time" You have been ofically depressed for like two years now" Jack ( Hayden Church) is getting married and wants to party hard before his wedding date. Miles takes him on a cross country wine tasting trip along the west coast you will never forget.Read full review
If you leisurely watch the Movie Sideways, you are going to miss the little things that makes this movie wonderful. My first experience with Sideways, we had friends over and I wasn't paying attention as much and I thought the movie was boring. When I sat down and actually watched the movie, without distraction, it has an amazing depth to it. The lead character is an anti-hero. You want to root for him, but he does things that make you cringe. His friend is the comic relief, and has wonderful one liners. This movie is probably not for everyone, but anyone who likes wine, and character development, this movie is a MUST SEE.
The film is about a depressed writer who goes up to the wine country with his buddy. The writer's buddy is about to be married and they have a week to spend together before the event. Little does the writer know that his friend wants nothing more than to sew some wild oats before his wedding day. The bantering between the two and the crazy situations they end up in as a result of the buddy's sewing wild oats, are laugh outloud, funny. The kinda funny that just takes you by surprise and you just gotta go with it. Great cast and well written. Recommended.
Nominated for 5 Oscars!!! This is a smart comedy. I think it is wonderful. A new Odd Couple slant. Two college buddies (now in their 40s) that could not be more opposite, come back together to take a week-long road trip to Santa Barbara County wine country. Both now in thier 40s Paul Giamatti(Payne) is an English teacher divorced 2 years and unable to get over it. Thomas Haden Church(Taylor) a kind of bohemian actor getting ready to finally marry and settle down. Heart warming and funny.
