I am homeschooling my 5 year old daughter and purchased this book ahead of time to use for her first grade language lessons. However, when I looked through the book I thought she would be able to handle it this year. (I don't know if I would do this with all of my children, but she is capable). The book is designed for first and second grades, however. The lessons take 5-10 minutes a day, and are structured in a way that in just a month she has learned and grasped the definition of a noun, and can name many proper nouns, as well as identify that they have a capital letter. She has also memorized a poem, narrated two stories, and did a picture study in this book. I really appreciate the author's style of teaching- as I am also using her "Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading" and it is going well too! If you like the philosophy of "A Well Trained Mind" you will like this style of language study I believe.Read full review
I was really excited about using this book - I LOVED "The Well Trained Mind" which is written by Jessie Wise and her daughter Susan Wise Bauer. However I was completely dissapointed with the content of this book. The biggest, most obvious problem with "First Language Lessons" is the low-quality illustrations used for "Picture Narration". The second problem with this book is how slowly the material is worked through. For instance there are about fourty lessons just on nouns! I think that is too much. Also it is so easy that my four year old is learning along with her sister without any problem! For claiming to be first-grade level work I think it ought to be a bit more challenging. It has much more of a pre-school feel to it. Personally, I also don't like the poetry memorization or story narration selections and have supplimented that. I'm sorry to have to write such a negative review of material written by someone I have so much respect for, but if you are looking for a good grammar course for your first grader - keep looking.Read full review
Awesome list of books. My children, ages 4,6,&8, have loved everything we have read so far! I do wish there was an alphabetical listing but that still does not change my excellent rating. In addition to a list of books and authors you will find other valuable information.
This is a very good product to teach grammar to children who need lots of review and reinforcement. It is easy to use.

I plan to use the book in the upcoming school year for my first grader. I haven't used it yet, but it was highly recommended from several different homeschooling moms. One friend even said it is a great resource to keep around even after your kids are through it. Since we are at the beginning of our schooling, I plan to use it for at least three kids.
