In the span of five violent hours on August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina destroyed major Gulf Coast cities and flattened 150 miles of coastline. Yet those wind-torn hours represented only the first stage of the relentless triple tragedy that Katrina brought to the entire Gulf Coast, from Louisiana to Mississippi to Alabama. First came the hurricane, one of the three strongest ever to make landfall in the United States -- 150-mile-per-hour winds, with gusts measuring more than 180 miles per hour ripping buildings to pieces. Second, the storm-surge flooding, which submerged a half million homes, creating the largest domestic refugee crisis since the Civil War. Eighty percent of New Orleans was under water, as debris and sewage coursed through the streets, and whole towns in south-eastern Louisiana ceased to exist. And third, the human tragedy of government mis-management, which proved as cruel as the natural disaster itself. Ray Nagin, the mayor of New Orleans, implemented an evacuation plan that favored the rich and healthy. Having lived it- My first EBAY recommendation.
Actually, the size of this tome is overcome by how easily readable it is. Having lived thru this misery known as KAtrina, and the misery continues, Dr? Brinkley finds the right words and scenarios to tell others (YOU) how the first ten days or so post-hurricane the City ( and Gulf Coast)in Chaos unfurled in all of the different areas. Highly recommended reading-pictures or some of the characters- remember this is not fiction and this is continuing so in order to understand what being "DOMED" means, read this book. Send help to New ORleans, it is a long way of ffrom being okay! Brinkley wrote pieces in the NY times during our evacuation so we sort of got an inside view into the politics- now, almost one year later- this is enlightening reading about the specific neighborhood heroes, as well as the CNN reporters who got the story RIGHT, the ones who reported it WRONG and all the ones in-between- makes for super reading. Buy two and share with a friend. Discuss among yourselves! I support Brinkley in most of his endeavours as he fully researches his subjects and has definitive opinions, with which you can agree or disagree. I do believe he is a local native to New ORleans or else he married a native New Orlenian so he has a vested interest in seeing the place rebuild properly, without thugs, drugs or poorer folks than the rest of the nation! We are back with hotels and restaurants, which he mentions in his book- the ones who were amazingly a part of the rescue efforts- and the police have been regrouped as he notes was important to having a normal city back- and flights into and out of our airport are not quite back to normal. We have had our first convention, Post-Katrina, of the American Library ASsociation (June29, 2006) who probably loved this reading as well!Read full review

Brinkley's The Great Deluge - a must read!
I ordered this book because I work in the Emergency Management field for state government. Brinkley's book is a scholarly dissection of the events happening before, during and after Katrina hit the Gulf Coast. His review does not pull any punches and presents in terms understandable to the public the failures at all levels - including the failure of people to leave when directed to do so before the storm! This book includes not only an accounting of the actions or inactions of government and citizens, but also paints numerous personal stories - of tragedy as well as heroism. If you work in Emergency Management this is a "must read". If you are a person who cares about your family and neigbors - this is a "must read". This is a good companion book to Barry's "Rising Tide" - a book dealing with the 1927 Mississippi flood.Read full review

In The Midst Of A Monster
Living in New Orleans at the time of Katrina, and having evacuated, I have always been interested in how my fellow New Orleanians delt with the storm. I know, unless you went through it, you can't explain it. This book takes you through all the days, before and after, in such detail and description, I feel as though I can experience, somewhat, what it felt like. He really researched and interviewed so thoroughly. An easy read, I didn't want to put it down.

The Great Deluge
I had read most of this book from a library copy and decided I wanted my own copy as this is THE disaster of my generation. Having lived and traveled to New Orleans several times, the city has always had a place in my heart. This honest, minute by minute account of the storm bearing down upon the area (not just N.O.) and how various areas and agencies worked (or didn't) is fascinating and detailed. A MUST read for anyone interested in this disaster. Very comprehensive...and not politically biased as many are. I highly suggest reading this book!
