So what if this was a sick and twisted parody. Some of the humor was just plain horrible, but that's what parody is. This film was directed and produced by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer. The covers tells us all to fight back tears of laughter watching this Unrated Pit-Of-Death Edition. This film touts now 300 times more outrageous then before. The film cracks fun at their rag-tag team of 13 Warriors to defend their homeland against the invading Persians, whose Ranks include impersonations of themes like Ghost Rider, Rocky Balboa, the Transformers, Britney Spears, and a completely messed up hunchbacked version of Paris Hilton! Meet the Spartans pokes total fun of a real movie in a totally disrespectful way. The main theme of the film seemed to be to poke fun of the men and their effeminate natures. The skipping into battle and men scantily clothed in nothing but leather underwear opens this subject up to total reinvention. Almost everything in film now for private home viewing on DVD (Unrated or otherwise) is going for political incorrectness, since our society is still hanging on to a small whiff of freedom left in or near the home (but not in the workplace). What else in the world would life be like if there wasn't anything funny or stupid to poke fun of. Of course, there is nothing fun about warring losers, so to poke fun at the Spartans seems the next best thing to do, since they eventually got defeated for being so brave. The first part of the film was the funniest with the initial parodies of the child rearing preferences of the Spartans. The American Idol thing was just a little off the deep end as well as the segments of Britney Spears. Carmen Electra was the main thing that held this film together. The dust buster segment with the Spiderman 3 spoof was just fantastic. I'm going to give this film a 4/5 for it's totally irreverent, sick parody of such a fine film as "300". I'll definitely have to catch this one again with someone who appreciates this type of humor again in the future. If you enjoy a good parody (i.e. spoof comedy) and can stomach all the usual crude and bathroom-type humor we have come to expect from these types of films, you will love this movie. Following in the footsteps of other more recent spoofs (Scary Movie series, Epic Movie...) Meet the Spartans pokes fun of previously released movies, in this case action films- mainly the movie 300 (although the fight scenes are a little more remniscent of Monty Python!). However, one thing that sets this movie apart from some of the others is that it also pokes fun of reality TV shows (including American Idol & America's Top Model) and several recent celebrity meltdowns, including the Tom Cruise scientology incident (on Oprah) & the ongoing the Britney Spears saga. So even if you havn't seen all of the action films you are still going to be able to get the jokes. And of course, Carmen Electra, who has become a staple in these types of films, holds a leading role this time. Which reminds me of one other thing that is different about this movie- there is a lot of sexual humor (i.e. Carmen Electra- what do you expect?) and also violence against children- which I thought was a bit over the line :( In this film King Leonidas (played by Sean Maguire) leads a group of 13 Spartan warriors into battle against the massive Persian army (that includes Ghost Rider and the Transformers) who are threatening to invade and dominate Sparta. While he is on crusade, the Queen (Electra) attempts to gain the people's support for the war by whatever means necessary.Read full review
"Meet the Spartans" is terrible but, then again, it's supposed to be terrrible. This is a deliberate spoof of the incredibly stupid "The 300", a movie that well deserves to be ridiculed. The actual story of the courageous Spartan defense of the pass of Thermopolae...The Gates of Fire...is an fabulous tale of patriotism and heroism. It didn't deserve the comic, male model treatment as depicted in "The 300". Evidentally the producers/directors of "Meet the Spartans" felt the same way and spoofed the special-effects monstrosity posing as contorted history. The last scene, shown as the credits are being reeled off, is a dance scene..."I WILL Survive!"...by the various weird characters in front of equally weird 'American Idol' judges. The judges get into the whole thing themselves with some doing kicks and gyrations from their judges' chairs. It is highly reminiscent of one of he last scenes...also a dance scene...in "Rocky Horror Picture Show" in which the characters all get into tights and wiggle around. Even the formal and objective, Dr. Scott, as a kind of objective witness, gets sucked up into the sexuality of the whole thing, bursts into song and lifts his 'paralyzed' leg to discover, to his amazement, it is also clad in tights. Well, the "Rocky Horror" analogy is there but this film isn't the same weird masterpiece.Read full review
I expect a blu ray disc to have clearer and sharper picture quality. "Meet the Spartans'" picture quality is poor. I can see snowy images and spots, which is not as good as or even comparable to some of my DVD movies. I think a DVD is a better deal than a Blu Ray for this movie. Thumbs down!!! I also purchased 10,000bc and this Blu Ray is very clear and sharp, the picture quality is great. Thumbs Up!!!
Meet the Spartans I really like this funny movie I highly reommend this very funny movie to everyone Thank you
