Surprisingly violent politics, but that's like today. Extremely-cute girls galore. Disney passsed away during filming, says the stars, but he had approved just about everything. Technicolor restoration flawless. Saturated red, green, blue everything! Hardly anything in between, but it's a-ok.

This is a ok film. It is very good for 2016. Gives you an idea of what it was like a 100 years ago. It is worth the time to watch it. Good leads and a fine supporting cast. Ok screen play. Good for the whole family.

The One and Only Genuine Original Family Band is one of two Walt Disney Musicals that were made starring Lesley Ann Warren and John Davidson. (The other movie is the Happiest Millionaire, which I highly recommend as well!) My grandfather was a movie projectionist when I was a child, and I had been privileged to view these movies at his theatre. I originally bought this movie as a VHS about 7 years ago on Ebay spending $75.00! I guess it was quite a bidding war! Sadly, the VHS broke, so I returned to Ebay to replace it. How wonderful to find a factory sealed DVD at a much more reasonable price! The quality was excellent, but mostly, it took me back to the days of old, sitting in a beautiful downtown Baltimore theatre with my Grandfather at the projector. I recommend this movie to anyone who loves wholesome family entertainment, music, and doesn't mind a bit of a history lesson. The story line revolves around the Dakota territories, and the Cleveland/Harrison Presidential election. Can anyone say "Electoral College?" Thanks to that movie, I understood the events of 2000 a lot better! It made perfect sense! You'll enjoy the lively musical numbers, the sweet love story, the family dynamics and the rowdy political antics of some strong-willed Democrats and firm yet funny Republicans! You'll recognize many members of the cast including a very young Kurt Russel and a dancing Goldie Hawn. This was their first meeting! Buddy Ebsen, and the bald guy from the Dick Van Dyke Show, as well as many others. Look for the movie, win it, open it up, pop some popcorn, turn down the lights, and have a great evening!Read full review
If you love those strange Disney movies that were with live actors, this one is a classic. Songs written by the Sherman Brothers are not of the level of Mary Poppins but have a great kick musically and lyrically and move the story from the moment the opening credits are over. Great musical actors abound; John Davidson, Lesley Anne Howe, Buddy Ebson and a wonderfully humorous turn for Walter Brennan who is his usual cranky grandfather self. This film is classic for its time and place and also has Kurt Russell who met his lifelong partner Goldie Hawn filming this movie. You have to look carefully to catch her in the musical numbers later in the film. There is also the main story of Democrats versus Republicans which is surprising as in 1888 they were the opposite parties than they are today. Great color and nicely filmed, this movie would entertain the whole family in a wholesome old fashioned way.Read full review
As a kid (I'm 46) this was the first movie I recall seeing in a theater and loved it! For sentimental reasons, I purchased it. It's a musical and historical fiction combination. Set during the political era of Grover Cleveland and Benjamin Harrison, families are moving west to the Dakota Territory to homestead. Filled with song and saga, plus a love story, the musical family sticks together through thick and thin...including political rivalry between Republicans and Democrats. Super "family movie", if you like musicals that are upbeat.
