AT&T is aggressively pushing its 3G network, and nowhere is this more evident than in the Nokia 6555. Priced at just $49 with a rebate and two year contract(no contract over 200.00€), the 6555 is an attractive little clamshell that sports a decent feature set, including a 1.3-megapixel camera, AT&T Music,XM Radio, integrated IM clients, push-to-talk (PTT), and great stereo Bluetooth. The Nokia 6555 looks pretty nifty, if somewhat retro. The first thing you'll notice when the phone is closed is the silver racing stripe around the face and back battery panel. I appreciate the sporty look, but the stripe calls to mind an '87 Trans Am a bit too strongly. PTT is accessible from the 262,000-color, 128 x 160-pixel resolution external LCD, but that's about it. You can use the external display to take pictures and video, but you first have to initialize the camera from the keypad. Flipping open the clamshell reveals a two-inch QVGA screen capable of displaying 16.7 million Brilliant colors. The phone felt a little flimsy in my hands: The plastic casing was just a bit too easy to bend and ply. I like the tactile keypad, as well as the very comfortable hot keys for jumping directly to AT&T Music, XM Radio, Cellular Video, and the camera function. The Nokia 6555 uses AT&T's slower UMTS data network (not HSDPA), but I was able to surf at good speeds using the MEdia Net browser. NYTimes.com loaded in 4 seconds; CNN.com loaded in 5; and Yahoo.com, which tripped up because of browser formatting, loaded in 7 seconds. Video clips also queued up quickly. Cellular Video content from CNN and ESPN loaded in just five seconds, but I've noticed some lag, and the videos looked grainy. A 200KB game of Konami's Pirate Poppers downloaded in just five seconds. Although this phone integrates Napster and Yahoo Music, I found the experience sorely lacking. Both services offer only side-loading via your PC, and Yahoo has the added drawback of requiring login information, which you can't create from the phone. XM Radio implementation was much better; it lets you start your free trial or purchase service from the phone and gain access to XM's streams. Music ID also worked well, and I was able to identify my Coheed and Cambria tracks accurately.I was intrigued by Billboard Mobile's "The Buzz" music portal; using The Buzz you can search artists' discographies and biographies, download ringtones, and browse tour dates, although you can't purchase concert tickers over the air. AT&T includes integrated IM clients, which impressed me. Using the options menu, you can sign into your AIM, Windows Live, or Yahoo Messenger accounts. The implementation was very clean, and I was able to sign in easily and leave the app running in the background. I couldn't find a way to sign into multiple accounts on AOL, Windows, or Yahoo, however. Voice quality on the 6555 is pretty good. I didn't notice any muffling, echoes, or garbling on my calls, even though the volume seemed a bit low. Battery life is satisfactory, at a rated six hours of talk time, but I noticed that using the 3G data connection shortens that very quickly. I was also easily able to connect the phone to my Altec Lansing T515 speaker via Bluetooth, which provided good stereo sound. PROS: • Affordable price • Fast 3G data • Slim & fashion design • Easy IM access CONS: • No over-the-air music downloads • Flimsy form factor The 3G Nokia 6555 may be just what you're looking for and is a decent alternative to the Samsung.Read full review
Nice Phone overall. The screens are both clear and bright, the graphics are very clean. I wish there was a way to dim the screen brightness, to extend battery usage, but that's no biggie. What I really like is the texting functions ... very nice and fast predictive text, and straighforward sending options. Compared to other non-qwerty keypad arrangements, this one is 'tops' ... very intuitive with minimal keystrokes. there's a lot to be said about the other tools and such, like music and the web, but I use it just to text google directories, and don't use the mpgs on it much. I have though, and the 2gig micro SD card has plenty of room for pics, files, transfer docs, and music. Other tools I find helpful is the "world clock" and Converter. The calculator is context rich also. Not many have Pi and square root and inverse functions, nevermind the trig functions like Sin, Cos, Tan, etc. degrees or Radians. That's unusual in a little phone. I use the bluetooth often to sync with my palm, send photos, and listen to music. All works great. It's sturdy. The open fold options are nice. I'm not so generous to give it an "Excellent" rating, but compared to other phones I've used, this one is clearly above "good" ... somewhere between "good and excellent" I like the phone a lot. That's why I'm on ebay buying some back up units. I like it that much! Thank you and good luck!!Read full review
I like that the ringer and volume and speakerphone are loud. I work around machines, thats why I chose this phone. I just bought my 3rd or 4th one, I forgot which. One refurb lasted 3 months and at best they last maybe a year. I never had battery issues and charged it every night. My calculators seem to randomly delete themselves. They can also give you a calculator with sin, cos, and tan buttons on it if you ask. The camera takes bad faraway pics and okay up close ones. When you click the button to take a pic, it makes a loud noise, so dont try to take a pic of an exam in class, lol. This takes a mini SD card. the usb plug is not a normal shaped small usb slot, so you have to buy a special nokia usb cord that is not cheap, you likely will not need to buy that though. I drop this phone constantly and it takes a beating just fine. I would not suggest playing music on it at full blast because it will blow out the speaker. It is also really loud when you turn it off and on. I prefer flip phones, because I keep my phone in my pocket and I wont scratch the screen with them.Read full review
I got this phone as an upgrade, I was happy to get back into a flip phone. This phone has been pretty much what I expected, its a nokia, and since I have not gotten the phone wet it's still working Very well. I constantly use the bluetooth feature, I put in a 2gb MicroSD card, and I run a feature rich Theme, so my battery life is about 1.5 days, if I forget to charge it at night, then I can get away with a quick 20 minute charge in the morning, if the phone dies out, it will still (or at least try) to turn back on to set off the alarm, and the alarm does work when the phone is powered off, the speaker phone does crack a little if you turn it up beyond 7 or 8, I like the media player feature, altho the 3gp video is kind of a limited codec. the camera works nice for snapshots or pictures, would like to have better resolution for video though, at least I know what I'm looking for when I upgrade again. I can say that this phone has been a very good experience, and If you like this phone but want to go with smartphone features then you can look forward to the 6650 fold which has a few minor physical differences but runs symbian 60 (if my memory serves me right). Nokia did a good job on this model, I'm still on my first phone, my girlfriend on the other hand has gone through 2 of them, altho she does work in catering and the 1st phone went down 6 flights of stairs, was still functional but the * key stopped working. If the battery lasted more than 36 hours, the video capture had a higher resolution and it took a standard USB adapter than this phone would be perfect in my own opinion.Read full review
Overall I like the Nokia 6555 well enough. It has many desirable modern features and is easy to use. The screen colors are vibrant and the exterior analog clock is really cool. However I am very dissapointed in the Nokia 6555's battery life. I had the battery replaced in the first phone I purchased, but it still did not hold a charge so I had the AT&T store give me a new one and I am still not satisfied with it's battery life. I purchased the unit for $99.95 with a $50.00 rebate, which I felt was a reasonable price. I just don't look forward to two years of keeping my mobile phone connected to a charger.
