This was my entry into Lisa Gardners' work. Admittedly, I was not impressed at first. The beginning is about Bobby Dodge, our main character, on the scene of a domestic dispute that has turned dangerous. We get both character development and technical aspects of real world sniper protocols. The mix seemed a bit dry and I didn't care about Bobby. The story and technical aspects were still interesting so I kept reading. The other main character, a victim?, named Catherine enters the story. What a fantastic character! This woman was completely real to me, and scary. Her story is the one our main character Bobby unfolds and it is a great story. Gardner mixes many influences into a sharp, well crafted and very original body of work. The twists, which I tried to predict all along, were totally unexpected and fantastic. I never saw anything coming. Lisa Gardner did the "Kill a friend" thing in this book. Folks can write to her and ask to have a friend killed in her next novel. A fun program, (check out lisagardner.com to see if you can have one of your friends killed in a future novel). BOTTOM LINE: Catherine Gagnon is a character with amazing strengths and weaknesses. Her story truly makes for a chilling, original and "can't put it down" read. The twists are unexpected and the technical aspects are based a real world research and believable characters.Read full review
Gardner draws you into the middle of a hostage situation where an elite SWAT-team member has but seconds to decide to shoot or not. His decision lands him in hot water, not only with the law, but with his own conscience, and has him wondering if he did the right thing by the victim--IF she WAS, in fact, a victim at all. You're taken along on a somewhat boring, somewhat bumpy ride through the lives of the two main characters. The ending is quite good, with some twists and turns you won't anticipate. I enjoyed this book, even though it bogged down in a couple of places, and needed more substance and believability over-all.
