Very up to date even including the 2008 election. Wonderful basic information about each president's term, plus little sidebars with fun & not as well known facts about each president, their wives or other important events of the year. Not a fuddy duddy boring reference, it's well written & very interesting. My 8 year old daughter saw me reading it & asked who I bought it for. I said it was for her & she'd appreciate it when she starts writing reports, but I will probably enjoy reading it more! The extra trivia-type information will help kids make their reports stand out & the history in it will help them parallel so many of the problems (& good things) that are happening in the world today. I would recommend for kids ages 8-14 & adults (parents of the 8-14 year olds) who would like to brush up on their American history. The only bad thing I have to say about it is that as a reference book personal bias should not creep into the historical facts. The worst was when the author (David Rubel), who is clearly not a fan of President Bush, wrote everything in Bush's chapter negatively, even in the wake of 9/11 when he pulled the country together. While he was certainly not a perfect president, the author felt the need to write everything about his 8 years in a negative light. It was clearly prejudicial, especially about the war, stem cell research, conservatives & Christian supporters, & not written as a Scholastic encyclopedia should be, for children, who will use this as a reference for school reports. He even downgraded everything about McCain & Palin during the election. President Clinton's indiscretions, White Water & his near impeachment was barely even touched on in his chapter. While time blurs the unfavorable things about each president & President Bush's term is fresh in our minds, it definitely should have been written from an unbiased point of view, with more respect & more facts & highlights of his presidency included like was for our other 42 presidents. Scholastic should have pointed this out before putting their name on it & calling it an encyclopedia.Read full review
