If you like the paranormal with truth, then these are for you. Yes they even have the original syndicated themes. As a collector there are a few surprises. On some of the episodes, the original Network Opens and Closes exist as they were first seen. Unfortunately, the original commercials were not included. The series originally ran in the late 50s and early 60s. Due to a clerical error in the 1980s, almost all of the entire original series fell into the US Public Domain, and that is why you see the larger collections being released by Public Domainers, imperfections and all. These shows are evidently from old syndicated and a few rare original prints (some well used by evidence of the cue marks in the right corners where the commercials would have been). Despite the film crackles, syndicated cue markers and all the film splices, these shows are very reasonably good to watch. This is new to me in that I never saw them before. I was an infant when this series was on TV. MGM studios had a hand in the production of these, and to me this classic TV stuff is much better than the garbage of Today's generation! The digital compression is good enought to watch on a 42" LCD without too much digital artifacts (There are some artifacts). Again for the money, 50 episodes of this classic is WELL WORTH THE BUCKS! Hwy I like the old film scratches. It take you One Step Beyond the perfect world of Digital Domain!Read full review
This is a great set for people who would also be fans of shows like "The Twilight Zone" and "The Outer Limits" from the 60s. The shows are a little overly dramatic but the ideas like the show I mentioned are titilating. Each episode is based on a true story (of course dramatized to the hilt) and at the end the viewer is given a choice of explanations or to choose their own. As to the set up up the DVDs themselves: the sound is all over the place - at times Loud and other times way too low; picture quality takes me back to the 60s and I want to move the antenna to get a better picture; and its a bit of a bear to navigate the simple menus as well as, the dvd does not save your place unless you are in the middle of an episode. But watching these episodes again are fun!
My wife loves these types of spooky, dramatic, little vignettes. Now I am hooked. This old TV series has 50 stories βbased on actual experiences.β God save the rest of us from similar ones! Sometimes the stories are a little predictable but the acting is amazingly good. In the tradition of the twighlight Zone, each episode is narrated at the beginning and the end. Most of the stories are complete but one is a 2 part story (both parts are in this collection). This is not a complete collection but rather a gathering of the β50 best.β If you are a hopeless buff of black & White, creepy tales with morale lessons, and actors who know their stuff, enjoy this little gem. You are going to take that βOne Step Beyond.β
This show came out long before my time and due to the low price, $10 delivered, I thought It would just be something to pull out and watch on rare occasions, and that the quality was going to be low, due to these being supposedly in the public domain, and the original film poorly kept, and that it was just going to be something different to buy and add to a somewhat extensive TV show/DVD collection I am trying to complete of "the strange" as well as "sci fi/adventure & comedy of pre 1980 TV", but I was evidently mistaken and very pleased upon watching the very first episode. The DVD set is actually excellent quality and the shows are well very written & have many early performances by some of the greatest actors ever in film! If your into the old black & white Twi light Zone,(actually, these just might be better than what is made today!) and similar shows of the truly bizzarrrrr, you will feel right at home! As these are truly Classic, long lost episodes that you will never see on cable! For the price, this set of 50 episodes can't be beat. Don't delay, get your copy today! I should add, There is another set available at about 10X as much for 49 episodes, (I believe there were 99 episodes made) so I opted to check out the lower priced set ($5+ $5 to ship)and now I just might go and purchase the more expensive set. However I am hesitant because I'm not sure what episodes would be repeated, if any.(as they do not tell you on the other set which episodes are included, though some folks pull the sets apart and sell those dvd's individually, and I just haven't had the time to compare what episodes are included!) This set was advertised with the shows and tells you which actors are featured in each episode via a booklet/list for easy selection. Great deal! Makes a great gift cause I'll bet most folks under 45 have never seen this show.Read full review
I purchased this DVD because the price was low. The picture quality of the disks are acceptable. Some of the program episdoes are of excellent quality, while many appear to be second generation copies. Please note that this DVD set is NOT a bootleg title. Mill Creek Entertainment, which produced this set, is a reputable company. I am assuming that where One Step Beyond may not have been as popular as the Twilight Zone or The Outer Limits, there probably was no market for preserving the original masters. If the original masters still exist then it may have been too costly to obtain them. I suppose, as a fan of One Step Beyond, it was better to have a sub-standard copy than to have none at all. Many of the episodes are of fine quality and for the price that I paid for this DVD set, it was worth purchasing and I have enjoyed watching these programs.Read full review
