This movie was not an excellent one in my opinion and should have been longer with more detail. It opens with drama that you could kill for and ends with on a happy note but you have to wonder what happened to the young lady and those children especially since she refused any help from the state, ha no job and anywhere to live. A part two might have to tell that part but I do not think that I would fall for buying it a second time around. The ladies do an awesome job delivering the message of the movie however and for that and that only, I would spend the money again to see it. The plot overall was pretty poor in my opinion. It left too many open pot holes. A movie telling this kind of story needs to really delivery stronger message than just the young lady leaving her mother unless of course it was the mission. But in this case and from what I saw, it really was not. This young lady already had a strong mind and strong will power to stay alive. Hmm.Read full review
The acting in this film was very excellent; however, the content is definitely adult based. If you're looking for sci-fi or action packed this is not the movie for you. It is not a love story with a happy ending either. But, if you want to get a reality check on a young black pregnant over-weight teen with a mom who never should have become a mother then this is your cup of tea. I purchased Precious mainly because it was endorsed by Oprah and because the actress portraying Precious won an Oscar for the role.
This adaptation of author Sapphire's best-selling novel about an overweight, illiterate African-American teen from Harlem who discovers an alternate path in life after she begins attending a new school. Clareece "Precious" Jones is only a teenager, yet she's about to give birth to her second child. Unable to read or write, Clareece shows little prospect for the future until discovering that she has been accepted into an alternative school. There, with a little help from a sympathetic teacher and a kindly nurse, the young girl receives something that most teens never get, a chance to start over again. First-time actress Gabby Sidibe gives a powerful, emotive performance. Equally good is talented actresses Mo'Nique, who is almost frightening as Precious' mother, and Patton as the compassionate teacher. Lenny Kravitz and Mariah Carey also have minor roles. The pacing seems to slow down unnecessarily toward the end and Precious's educational progression seems a bit confused and not completely fleshed out, but this is minor stuff. This is a very inspired work of art by someone with a fresh vision. This movie is a must see.Read full review
I like the story but was greatly disappointed that the cast thought it necessary to use such nasty language.I really was not sure what to expect from Monique being that I had adored her in the sitcom "The Parkers" yet had heard in her comedy routines that she can be very vulgar.I did not think Mariah Carey really had a standout role in the movie which I was hoping she would have more parts. As for Gabby,I was not sure because I had never heard of her before this movie. She did an excellent job but also used vulgar language.I was hoping they would have shown her father instead of just glimpses of his body in the sexual scenes.I was a bit disappointed in the ending and would had liked to see Precious gone much further so we could had seen what she did with her life after cutting her mom out of her life. There is much more I could say but I am will leave it at that and say that all in all it was a good movie but not as I had been expecting as far as the content of the movie.Read full review
OMG!!! any movie that gets me so involved & to hate the mama so much!! i know is a fabulous film. monique plays a very hard role, but she is excellent!!! (i love monique & mariah carey) mariah plays a very hard hitting role as well. anyone that has ever went through tuff drama in there life can relate. any way this movie was so good i had to buy it!!! i was so glad she stood up to her mama & changed her live around, having mariah who got her back & helped her turn her life aroud. (along with the teacher she had) we need solid good people in life.
