One of the more interesting and not often mentioned facts about Lincoln is that he hated killing. He hated it as a child, not liking to hunt even though his family was very poor, and later, as President, he hated the killing that took place on the battlefields during the Civil War. The author opens this neat little biography for younger children with this interesting and telling piece of information. It is shame that we are not told more about the sensitive and gentle nature of the man who was the 16th President of the United States. The author does tell us however how simple and unaffected Lincoln was, enjoying the company of the common man. We are also given interesting little details which help bring the photographs and illustrations to life. Lincoln worked on a flatboat, in a store, as a postmaster, and was often seen wearing clothes that were clearly way too small for him. He arrived in Springfield with a mere $7 in his pockets and used to store bills and papers in his stovepipe hat. One point that could have been made clearer in this book was that the Civil War did not just occur just because of the differences in opinion over slavery between the northern and southern states. In the beginning of the war Lincoln was determined to keep the United States together, as a Union, and he would not tolerate the succession of any state from that Union for any reason. All in all a very good introduction to Abraham Lincoln and his life's work. At the back of the book the reader will find a timeline, a "Words to Know" section, a "Learn More" section which lists both books and Internet sites, and an index. This is one of the "Heroes of American History" books., Children's Literature
