IN THEATRES JANUARY 2, 2008 (Limited)Writer-director Andrew Piddington (SHUTTLECOCK, THE FALL) delves deep into the mind of Mark David Chapman in THE KILLING OF JOHN LENNON. Jonas Ball makes his feature-film debut as Chapman, the crazed gunman who shot John Lennon on December 8, 1980. Basing his script on Chapman's own words from interviews, writings, court transcripts, and depositions, Piddington retraces the events leading up to the shooting, which reverberated around the world. He goes back three months, showing Chapman's dysfunctional relationship with his mother (Krishna Fairchild) and his inattentiveness to his wife (Mie Omori) in Honolulu, where he was living after leaving his hometown of Decatur, Georgia. Chapman soon becomes obsessed with J. D. Salinger's classic novel THE CATCHER IN THE RYE, seeing himself as fictional character Holden Caulfield, who must root out the phonies of the world. By accident, he chooses former Beatle John Lennon as his victim, ultimately reasoning that Lennon sings about imagining no possessions yet is a millionaire living in the ritzy Dakota building in New York City, so he must be brought down. Chapman buys a gun, heads to the Big Apple, and starts stalking the Dakota, gripping his copy of Lennon's comeback album, DOUBLE FANTASY, recorded with his wife, Yoko Ono. Through voice-over narration, dialogue, and poignant one-person scenes, Piddington follows Chapman's dark, dangerous descent that results in cold-blooded murder. The film is shot on location in Decatur, Honolulu, and Manhattan, at the exact spots where the actual events took place. Ball gives a quirky, deeply felt performance, part Travis Bickle in TAXI DRIVER, part Rupert Pupkin in THE KING OF COMEDY, part Valerie Solanas in I SHOT ANDY WARHOL, embodying Chapman, while Piddington manages to hold viewers in suspense even though they know what is going to happen.

Revolting - But, a must for the Beattles Completists.
A must for the Beattles Completists. Not much for anyone else. Man, you have to be a die-hard to sit through this for 2 hours. Although the movie appears to be poorly directed, newcomer Jonas Ball give a good performance in the role of Mark David Chapman, John Lennon's killer. Personaly, I find it revolting to make a movie like this - just for money . . .

Perfect title
Drove home the knowledge that this was a senseless tragedy; makes me angry; difficult to watch; I know I would not want to be an actor in this film; disturbing; I think even if someone was NOT a John Lennon fan they would be sickened by this film unless they were planning to murder/assassinate someone; gave it an poor rating but would not rate it at all; someone made money on this and I have a problem with that; do not recommend anyone buying this dvd and it should be removed from the shelves of any and all stores and banned from ebay; 20 years to life = he should stay in prison w/out any hope of parole; let him out into the general population; even prisoners I suspect disrepect and hate him

The Killing of John Lennon
This movie wasn't as good as I expected it to be. The part I did like is the way it shows you how John Lennon was stalked and eventually killed. Mark David Chapman was totally a nut! It tries to show you what he was thinking and what he was doing up until the assassination. It is truly sad how these stalkers become obsessed with famous people, and how that obsession can turn so violent and rob the world of such a wonderful talent. What have we missed out on? Noone will ever know, because of the ignorant acts of one totally insane NUT! Anyway, if you enjoy a true story, check it out. It is interesting, just not quite what I was expecting.
