This author really understands and is able to communicate Hawaiian values and culture. I read this, although I purchased it for my grand-daughter and think this story was well-written and inventive. The end (resolution with cousin Rachel) was a bit predictable, but the entire story was enjoyable. A good short read for ages nine and up. I hope Lisa Yee writes more Hawaii-themed books and that American Girl dolls continues to produce more clothes and accessories for Kanani and her friends. The glossary of Hawaiian words in the back was very useful.
The book had scribbled on pages, crayon all over the cover and the cover was in bad shape. I'm not sure who would consider this "good" condition, must library books are in better condition than this book!
