This is a really entertaining account of the tensions between and bigger than life personalities of Yankee owner George Steinbrenner, manager Billy Martin and star slugger Reggie Jackson, all set against the backdrop of NYC in 1977. We get the search for the Son of Sam killer, and the mayoral race, but the main focus is the 1977 Yankees. The series is brilliantly cast, with most of the actors not only physically resembling the people they portray, but capturing their essence as well. The baseball sequences are well done--not always the case in baseball movies!--and are interspersed with actual footage of the games. very entertaining, nice price, good deal.

The Bronx is Burning is a very worthy recreation of the famous 1977 Yankees season with memorable acting by Oliver Platt (Steinbrenner), John Turturro (Billy Martin) and Daniel Sunjita (Reggie Jackson). The supporting characters are also well developed and the story is entirely engaging. The other things happening around New York -- such as Son of Sam Killings -- are covered but definitely come across as secondary to the baseball plot, which is strong enough to carry the day. Full credit to ESPN for putting together this excellent package: if you are a Yankees or baseball fan, you won't be disappointed. (P.S. A lot of historical footage is really intelligently weaved into the plot, including famous ABC broadcasts of the season and World Series by Keith Jennings and Howard Cosell.)Read full review
I watched this series when it was originally aired on ESPN. At the beginning I thought it would not be that good because the series was trying to relieve this moment in time where the city of New York was going through hard time and also the Yankees were going through hard time too, but after I started watching it, I followed it until the end. It caught my attention with the great acting and the way they made the story. They tried to do it the most closely possible to the real events but adding a twist of discussions, face offs and situations the resembled a young Reggie Jackson in a Yankee uniform. I love this series. I recommend it to everyone who likes to se sports documentaries. It’s a "Two Thumbs Up" must see series. Specially for Yankee fans who want to relieve that historic 1977 run that culminated with a World Series Ring.Read full review
What a great series! If you love the Yankees, and you were around in the 70s, this is a great series to watch! Between the excellent acting and the portrayals of famous Yankees, cut with actual footage of TV coverage from the 70s, as a Yankees remake, this is a great series. Woven throughout are the current events of the times, the big news makers, that give the story of the Yankees it's background, so you can really feel like you are back then, watching the news, but also getting an inside look behind the headlines. Lots of laughs, lots of drama, lots of Baseball and lots of the climate and culture of NYC in a desparate time. I bought two copies of this series for my co-workers who love both the news, and the Yankees. I loved it for the walk down memory lane of a time when I was just becomming aware of the world around me.Read full review
If you lived in New York in the late 70s you know this movie was spot on. 1977 was a troubled year in New York City. It was an election year and with David Berkowitz aka Son Of Sam killing people, the blackout, the looting, the fires and the garbage strike going on, The New York Yankees was a great distraction. Their year mirrored what was happening in the city and in the end they were world champs. Just like the people of New York, what doesn't kill them only makes them stronger. The "Bronx Is Burning" was fantastic! The acting was great and they looked like the characters they were playing. If you're a Yankee Fan and or was a New Yorker you have to see this film and even if you're not you'll love it, highly entertaining.
