A regular round piece like a plate is generally formed on a jigger, also known as the process of flat pressing. The formed plate, now referred to as greenware, is left to dry. The piece is finished with water sponging to gently remove any scratches and scars appearing on the surface. Bisquit, also known as the first firing, is commenced at a temperature of around 1,200 to 1,300 degrees centigrade at a controlled rate. This causes the greenware to become durable, white, and translucent. About 20% shrinkage of the greenware can occur at this stage and is adjusted for by the Lenox artisans. Glazing comes next which consists of a mixture of frit and kaolin. The item is now referred to as a biscuit, which is the greenware after the first firing. A biscuit is nonabsorbent, therefore the glaze needs to be applied by using a spraying process. The glazed biscuits are then set into a type of kiln referred to as a stagger, in order to avoid direct exposure to any flames. The kiln cars are then sent into a kiln tunnel. The temperature raises to approximately 1,000 to 1,200 degrees centigrade. The glaze melts and fuses onto the biscuits. All glostware, the name after this second firing, coming out of the kiln are meticulously inspected. The precious platinum and 24 karat gold is hand blushed onto the place setting when required.
