This film about the Nixon Presidency's corruption, expressly the Republicans' bugging of the Democrats at the Watergate in 1971, took home 4 Oscars in 1976 for: Best Adapted Screenplay by William Goldman; Best Art Direction - Set Decoration by George Gaines & George Jenkins; Best Sound by Multiple Recipients; Best Supporting Actor: Jason Robards. "All the President's Men" was filmed on location in the nation's Capitol: Washington, DC. These event are true and transpired between 1972 & 1974. The film remains on the AFI's top 100 thrillers list to date (2009). The film is based upon Washington Post reporters, Bob Woodward & Carl Bernstein's best selling book with the same title. The film's director, Alan Pakula, adapted their text for this film. The film is about the 1972 investigation of the Republican break-in to & bugging of the Democratic Party's headquarters. Historically, this event has become known as "The Watergate Burglary." Richard Nixon was the US President who orchestrated this fiasco and was impeached for doing so. The true story is complex enough to make for a thrilling intrigue. The burglary involved the US' highest ranking member of government. The Washington Post's eager young journalists Bob Woodward (Robert Redford) & Carl Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) are to be credited for uncovering the secret data which led directly to the impeachment of the 37th US President, Richard M. Nixon who was known back then as "tricky Dick"). Arguably, the Republican Party has never recovered it's reputation enough to be truly trusted by the American people since Watergate. The significance of violating the public's trust has been grossly under-estimated to date. Jason Robards steals the show as the Washington Post's executive editor--the guy at the helm who supported Woodward and Bernstein's journalistic efforts to expose the corruption in the US government's highest officers. Hal Holbrook became a legend for portraying the 20th century's most mysterious informant who became known only as "Deep Throat." Woodward and Bernstein would not disclose Deep Throat's identity until he died. But, the informant disclosed who he was recently. Some view him as one of the most mysterious heroes of the era of political history. Others give more credit to the Washington Post, as a journalistic newspaper, but most especially to Woodward & Bernstein. It's likely that they will be the historical heroes for risking their lives to investigate the titular heads of government. Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman have been associated with Woodward and Bernstein ever since the film became a classic~Read full review
Before I got the title of this VHS movie in a different art work designed box from WHV. In that version there is a scene towards the end that had video drop outs through part of that scene. So I ordered this artwork box version. This box artwork is the best version. That scene is not defective. So I recommend this one. Thanks.
