Let me preface my review by stating that I am a huge fan of Clive Cussler's writing in general, and the Dirk Pitt series, in particular. I have always thoroughly enjoyed exploring the world through Dr. Cussler's stories, living vicariously through Dirk Pitt. Trojan Odyssey was no different. As much as I enjoyed this story, however, I would be lying if I said that I wasn't a tiny bit disappointed. It seems that Cussler has found a plot formula that works, and he's sticking with it. Having read many other Dirk Pitt stories, I was really hoping for a fresh approach to the development of this one, but it was classic Cussler to the point of predictability: **Wealthy antagonist(s) develop ingenious plot to become even more wealthy. However, the sinister scheme has a hidden, ecologically disasterous effect. Dirk Pitt, Al Giordino, and the rest of the NUMA crew stumble onto the plan while investigating something unrelated nearby. The reader is soon swept up in the action as Dirk and Al push themselves to their limits, trying to discover the truth about what is happening, while at the same time, discovering lost treasures and solving mysteries of ancient civilizations.** Ultimately, I really like the story. It is still very easy to appreciate the research and imagination that goes into making one of these stories - notwithstanding the formulaic structure. Cussler's style is light, easy to read, and entertaining. I particularly appreciate the fact that Dirk and Al are getting older, with the rest of us (unlike James Bond). It provides for some humorous bantor. While I'm usually not a fan of abridgements, this one is not bad. I recommend this story for Cussler fans and soon-to-be-fans alike. RonRead full review
I bought this for my wife's birthday, because she loves to listen to a talking book when she drives long distances. It really makes the time go faster - and you arrive refreshed!
Takes a bit of history and elaborates to a creative action story. Creates a desire to review the history of the past. Excites the desire to explore for treasures and clues of the past. Could not put it down.
