This is an utterly fascinating film about how a dramatic play evolves through weeks of rehearsal. It's the work of Sam Shepard, who both writes and directs a sterling cast of actors, including Sean Penn and Nick Nolte playing brothers who fight after the death of their estranged, alcoholic father. During the film you realize that the story of the play is rooted in Sam's unresolved conflicts with his real life father, who died in self-imposed isolation in 1983. The title of the play is "The Late Great Henry Moss," but this film makes you aware of the process of bringing this play to fruition at the Magic Theatre in San Francisco in November 2000. Sam Shepard invited Michael Almereyda to record the experience of developing the play with his cast. Anyone interested in writing, directing, or acting for the theater can benefit from the insights offered in this film. It's a must-see for those who recognize what Sam Shepard has contributed to the American theater.Read full review
