First released in January 1969, the soundtrack album to the Beatle's animated classic film "Yellow Submarine" still is a fine music CD release. While the other Beatles albums stand out in their own unique way, this one is a special album that has some great music. When the soundtrack albums for "A Hard Day's Night" and "Help!" were first isued in America, they contained only the Beatles songs featured in each movie, as well as the instrumental score. In Great Britain, these albums featured all Beatles material throughout. But, when "Yellow Submarine" was released worldwide, it had Beatles songs and the instrumental score performed by George Martin and his orchestra together on the same disc. The result is a true musical masterpiece. The six Beatles songs represent an eclectic mix of music; something that they were noted for at that time. The songs "Yellow Submarine" and "All You Need Is Love" were already big hit singles from 1966 and 1967 - but, it was the four new songs that were the real treat. George Harrison shines through as a full-fledged composer with two songs: "Only A Northern Song" and "It's All Too Much". The track "All Together" works well as a catchy sing-a-long. Perhaps the best song featured here is the effective rocker "Hey Bulldog", which could serve as a prototype for Heavy Metal. The seven George Martin tracks are "Pepperland". "Sea Of Time", "Sea Of Holes", "Sea Of Monsters", "March Of The Meanies", "Pepperland Laid Waste" and "Yellow Submarine In Pepperland". These tracks work fine on the original vinyl release; but, it is on the CD version that they finally shine brilliantly and sound better than ever. Finally, you can hear all of the clarity as it works through your stereo's speakers. "Yellow Submarine" rightfully takes its place alongside the remaining albums in the Beatles catalog. Plus, you also get to experience each Beatle singing lead vocals on the same album. And the band begins to play.Read full review
It's the Beatles, what more do I have to say? I had this on vinyl, then on eight-track, then again on cassette, now I have it on compact disc (I wore out the album, eight-track and cassette!). I also bought the Help! cd, same goes for that!

"Yellow Submarine" has more great Beatles music, however I'm just not crazy about half of the album being tunes not done by the Beatles. Still, it is part of the Beatles musical history and should be in every Beatles' fan collection.

I wanted this version of the YS soundtrack as it contains some of the orchestral music composed by George Martin. While the more recent version has more of the Beatles songs, the orchestral music is gone.
