This is quite an obscure Punk film from 1982 that finally got released on dvd in America in 2008. I don't think it's been released in the UK... Three teenage girls (including Diane Lane and Laura Dern) form a Punk band - The Stains - go on tour in America and become an overnight success! More because of TV exposure than any talent! The other bands on the tour are an ageing metal act - The Metal Corpses (led by Fee Waybill of The Tubes) and, best of all, a fictional UK Punk band - The Looters - featuring Ray Winstone on Vocals, Paul Simonon on Bass, Steve Jones on Guitar and Paul Cook on Drums! They do a couple of Professionals songs and it's good/interesting stuff. You can look on this film as being either a cynical commentary on teen angst and rampant consumerism, or as a prescient allegory for the Riot Grrrl scene... But, in my opinion, it's well worth it just for the times when the former members of The Clash and the Sex Pistols are on the screen - and Ray Winstone puts in a surprisingly good performance.Read full review
A young Diane Lane gives one of cinema's most obnoxious performances in history (and I mean it as a compliment - it's a good acting job) in a movie that seemed so great seeing it 25 years ago when you were a teenager, but seeing it now after all those years, awful! You want to feel sorry for Corrine "3rd Degree" Burns at the start since she's an orphan but with her nasty attitude you wind up rooting for her downfall at the end. The ending is classic Hollywood absurdity...just after her fans turn on her as a sellout and her career seemingly over, suddenly and with no explanation she's got a hit record and slick video out! Never mind that her hit song was stolen by her from another band with no threat of a copyright lawsuit, her manager had just dumped her and the rest of her band had run off! There is something Madonna-ish in this story, amazing since it came out only a year or two before she hit it big. I think Madonna must have seen this film and copied the clothes and the attitude into her act. So if you buy this movie to see it for the first time in years, better give it to your teenage kids, they'll love it, but for the rest of us, I think we've all just are too grown up now to still like this movie.Read full review
Although it's a dated post punk movie, it still resonates when you think about how many bands are sucked into selling out when signed to a major record deal, which is what is seen at the end of this movie. It would've been nice if this DVD had included the original ending as a special feature, maybe Criterion or Shout Factory, (hint, hint). Wishful thinking. And with one of The Professional's best songs featured, it brings back memories of the gold ol' days. A good cult classic all around. The copy I received was in REALLY good condition, and at a good price.

A long lost VHS thankfully issued on DVD in 2008. Another one of those much loved films (the other was On the Air Live with Captain Midnight) that USA's Night Flight aired in the early 80's. Very early role for Diane Lane, made before the more widly seen Rumblefish, but just after the HBO Showtime favorites A Little Romance and Touched by Love (an Elvis flick). The cool selling point to the film is seeing Fee Waybill of the Tubes and guys from the Clash and Sex Pistols in acting roles. VERY similar to another "punk rock girl flick," Times Square, where a girl becomes an overnight media music sensation.
If you like The Stains, you will love this.
