The "Mercury Dime" is actually not of the god Mercury, rather it is a portrayal of the Statue of Liberty. The "Mercury Dime" is also more correctly called the "Winged Liberty." The coin was designed by Adolf Alexander Weinman, the same person who designed the Walking Liberty Half Dollar that went from 1916 to 1947, the Winged Liberty Dime series went from 1916 to 1947. In my opinion, the Walking Liberty and Winged Liberty represent two of the best designs on a coin ever made in the U.S., with the exception of the much more pricey St. Gauden's Gold Walking Liberty. These coins can be bought at almost the meltdown value of silver. They are a good idea to keep if we actually have an economic crisis, since they are such a small denomination that people can afford them if silver escalates. My reason for buying these coins does not have to do with investing in silver, it has to do with the fact I love the design and love collecting this series and the Walking Liberty series. Most of the time I just buy these near meltdown value. I do not have a lot of money to get the graded coins by PGCS, ANACS, ICG, or NGC, and the best thing about these coins is that at the price I pay for them and the quality I know they are not copied coins. Beautiful coins! Start a small collection today. One can even focus on toned Winged Liberties, they are very pretty!Read full review
