I watched this movie as a child one afternoon at my grandmas house while she was busy in the kitchen and it terrified me. I sat glued in fear hoping Tommy would escape the terrible piano prison he was captured in and hoped my mom would not become a zombie like his mom. Some childhood movies left an imprint on my mind and as an adult I have went on a search for them. Recently I found "The Lost World" by Irwin Allen and Walt Disney's "Dr. Syn and the Scarecrow of Romney Marsh" and now The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T. All three movies were missing pieces of my childhood that are now found but there are more movies I'm searching for that I do not have titles only memories so the search continues. I really really really don't like The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T but I bought it for closure and I am wondering if Dr Seuss actually liked kids...a grinch who steals their presents...a strange cat that causes all kinds of mischief while moms away...and then this movie. The movie is not humorous or happy but strange and mildly depressing ,.... a young boy is held prisoner by a deranged piano loving lunatic with zombie enslaving powers that has erased Tommy from his mothers memory and her nurturing protecting love. Tommy being strong willed sets out to free his mother and himself but is pursued by the enemy whose intentions are punishment, imprisonment and death. Tommy's only hope and friend is the plumber and even then Tommy has to risk his life to convince the man of the piano lunatics plot to do him in. Dr. Seuss chases us through out the movie, drags us to his dungeons and we ride the elevator of doom with the executioner but in the end he does write a happy ending allowing "Good to subdue Evil" and Tommy, his mom and the plumber live happily ever after (without piano lessons we hope). I rate this movie a three out of five only because it is so strange and unique, the musical score, the sets, even the Dr. Seuss vocabulary are all brilliant, the acting is superb but it is a very strange movie that disturbed me at a very very very young age and as an adult I still don't care for it. .Read full review
You wouldn't think your kids would like it. Its a very old movie and graphics are kinda weird BUT, Dr. Suess must really know what he is doing because my kids were glued to it from beginning to end.
My husband ordered the movie because he remembered seeing it as a child. He still enjoyed the Dr. Seuss storyline & Set design.
