Dr. Martin Luther 1483 - 1546 was a Reformation leader who was a brilliant Bible exegetic. Luther's writing penetrates the heart in an amazing way. What is amazing is, he really had no one to teach him while he fought against the non-scriptural doctrines of the sixteenth century. This 755 page book is based upon selected writings from Luther's Works. It is most interesting to note that Luther was confronted with the same false doctrines of men that are being taught by Televangelists' and others in todays' world. Mainly, that man who is "dead in sin,"(Ephesians 2:1) wants to believe he/she contributes to their own salvation, and can be saved by works, (i.e. Decisions for Christ without repentance, without being made "spiritually alive" (2 Cor. 4:6) or even reading the Bible - Ephesians 1:13 -14). How does a "natural," non-repentant, non-spiritual sinner make a decision to believe when God does not hear non-believer's prayers, (John 9:31), and his/her own human will cannot take presidence over God's will or election (Ephesians 1:4-6)? A corpse cannot raise itself from the dead, and neither can "natural man" contribute to or save him/herself with any power or any works. These issues were at the heart of Luther's writings; as the Bible says in Ephesians 2:8, a person is saved by faith, through God's gift of grace (undeserved favor), and not works or of themselves or of human decision, (John 1:12-13). If the article of Justification by Grace Alone ( then through faith) is lost, then all true Christian doctrine is lost, and man becomes subject to his/her own destruction, as Peter says of Paul in 2 Peter 3:15 -16. The world would be much better off, if we had a Martin Luther today and if people would read the Bible, as Romans 10:17 says, "Faith comes from hearing..." Instead, many want to believe that man has all the answers in books, TV broadcasts, and other media. People want a quick road to salvation and anyone with a promise of salvation who can create a charismatic "feel good" atmosphere is accepted with open arms. As Luther says, "you must do your own believing," just as "you must do your own dying." This is a terrific starter book on learning Biblical truths, all but lost in modern day-to-day society. I would also recommend reading Luther on Galations, identified by John Bunyan author of Pilgims Progress, as the book he prefers over all others except the Bible. Also read, Luther on Romans, and Luther's Sermons on the Passion of Christ. All penetrating works that will touch the soul. Most important, read the Bible, particularly the New Testament, God's instruction book on salvation.Read full review
A must read for those of the reformed faith. It is right and necessary that you know what upon your faith stands. Great book to read in meditative snip-its.
