This is another CD I purchased because I was covering a local production of the show. It was the first time that this show had been done in this market. I enjoyed the show sufficiently that the CD proved a good investment beyond being research material. Would-be buyers who have not seen the show should note that much of the show's comic content is either visual or contained in the dialogue rather than in the lyrics of the songs but this is a true and faithful representation of the songs in the show. FYI, it's a comedy about a bunch of very weird kids trying to win a spelling bee while dealing with their own individual problems and several quirky adults. I can't think of any of the songs off-hand -- let alone any that would stand on their own as pop hits outside the context of the show (as is true with the songs in many modern musicals!) -- but anyone who enjoyed the show will enjoy this album...and that's why I rate it "excellent."Read full review
I saw this in Nashville, IN and was incredibly impressed by how expertly crafted each scene was and how much FUN and enjoyable the entire musical was. The only song I really didn't care for was Chip's Lament, but that song is indeed amusing and awkward at the same time. My favorite numbers were Magic Foot, I Love My Dictionary, Pandemonium (the showstopper), the Goodbye reprises (hilarious), and the I Love You song. This may not be up everyone's ally, but for those of us who have sat through spelling bees, seen spelling bees or at least have been close to spelling in someway (or dictionaries), or just lovers of language and music will appreciate this little gem ! Absolutely loved this show when I first saw it in Sheffield, MA and later on Broadway. Fantastic musical.
